* Sa28Nov 7pm: <b>Celebration@Artworks</b>: As some people may have already seen, our Community Theatre at Artworks has some rather nice new chairs. Gone are those old, green plastic BBQ chairs — replaced by 120 brand-new padded seats covered in a very fetching dark red fabric. The arrival of the seats marks the end of an 18-month project to upgrade its facilities by the group of volunteers that now runs the theatre. During that period the group has raised over $40,000 to improve the acoustics, purchase a new PA system, install an internal communications system, buy several new stage lights, replace the lighting control system and — finally — to give the audience something softer to sit upon! To celebrate the end of 18 months of hard work, there will be another Evening@Artworks, where a wide variety of entertainers bring their talents and expertise in to entertain all comers. Admission is free to all, and you're invited to bring a plate to share for supper. The doors and café will open at 6:30, with entertainment starting at 7:00. If you'd like to perform a song, dance, reading, mime, skit or whatever, please contact the Theatre on 372-2941 or [mailto:ArtworksTheatre@gmail.com ArtworksTheatre@gmail.com]. @ Artworks Community Theatre
Or where there's a good feed of mussels? Add your miscellaneous tidbits of interest to the Island Trivia page.

Have a seat
Dozens of roadside seats have sprung up around the island in within a couple of years, as far out as past Cactus Bay even - and all built thanks to the generosity of an anonymous benefactor.

Penguin rescue
During the building of the new wharf at Matiatia in 1992, 13-year-old Tom Delamore came back from a soccer game in town to find diggers moving the rock wall. Tom was horrified at the imminent destruction of a nest of little blue penguin and, as a result of his protest, work ceased. The penguin were relocated to Tiritiri Matangi.
Little Blue Penguin still live in the Matiatia seawall and can be heard at dusk.

Oh, Rhett
Legend has it Vivienne Leigh (Gone with the Wind) once visited the Harbour Masters house at Matiatia, coming to the island on board the Auckland mayor's yacht. The mayor had brought her to visit Fred Alison, the landowner at Matiatia.

Behind The Green Door
Local legend has it that the green barn down at Matiatia was once upon a time something far more entertaining than a mechanic's workshop. Can anyone remember the precise shenanigans that went on in there?

Starlight
Among stars rumoured or proved to have visited the island during the first America's Cup to be raced on the gulf (2001?) were Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman (true), and Jack Nicholson (maybe true - rumoured to have choppered in, landing on the rear deck of a super super yacht in Oneroa Bay). Lenny Henry and Dawn French definitely did spend some months here, hidden away in a leased house at the bottom end but also seen chilling out with coffee at Salvage. Bill Gates came ashore at Little Oneroa for supplies (true). He was recognised by teenager Eric Hillman who said hello and Bill shook his hand. More recently Justin Timberlake was seen walking along Onetangi Beach. Apparently Neil Young once had his hair cut in Oneroa and Noam Chomsky has also visited our fair isle.

Maynie Thompson has spent many years as an active campaigner in the anti-nuclear movement and as a front line peace activist.

Waiheke was hotbed of peace activism in the eighties and Maynie and other local women found plenty of support as they took their message of peace to the world. In 1983 Maynie participated in a march to Wellington calling for the New Zealand government to take a stand on the nuclear issue. Enthused by that experience, a year later Maynie visited Britain to join the women's camp at Greenham Common protesting the deployment of American nuclear missiles on British soil. She wasn't merely a passive participant in this protest, she was involved in cutting the fence and raiding the Greenham Common military complex.

Two years later Maynie again ventured overseas to participate in the Great Peace March across the United States walking much of the way from Los Angeles to Washington DC again calling for peace and an end to the nuclear threat.

Maynie's activism continued into the 1990's with her participation in the 1995 Peace Flight to Tahiti. This action was to protest French Nuclear testing on the Pacific atoll Mururoa and to lend support to the indigenous people of Tahiti and other Pacific nations who were in the region were the French chose to carry out their nuclear dirty work.

On the 8th of June, 2007 it was the 20th anniversary of the passing of legislation to make New Zealand nuclear free. To get a local slant on this historic occasion Beach Radio invited Maynie Thompson onto the Island Life magazine show to discuss her involvement in the anti-nuclear movement in the 1980s. She has dedicated many years to the campaign for peace and she wanted to emphasise the overwhelming support she had received from the Waiheke community over this time. She justifiably looks back on her involvement in the peace movement with pride.
An Audio Island History

The Beach strives to be not just radio on Waiheke, but Waiheke radio, a station that reflects the island and its people. To that end we often broadcast interviews with local people and performances by Waiheke musicians. Recently we have begun to archive these broadcasts to ensure they will be available in years to come. Our aim is leave an audio history of Waiheke. These recordings have been stored on-line at The Internet Archive , a project dedicated to 'building a digital library of Internet sites and other cultural artifacts in digital form'. You can access the material The Beach has archived here.

Live On The Beach

Every May, to mark NZ Music Month, The Beach presents Live On The Beach, a series featuring Waiheke musicians playing live in our studio. The series was started in 2003 and proved so popular it became an annual event. Throughout the history of Live On The Beach we have tried to showcase musicians who don't get the opportunity to perform in front of a audience on the Island whether it be because of their age, or because they are playing music that doesn't fit the solo acoustic blues format favoured by many of the local venues. Most of these performances have been recorded, and many are now available to listen to on the internet or download. Find more info and audio on The Beach Radio Blog here and here.

Alternatuis

In 2006 The Beach launched its very own music awards, The Alternatuis. Arising from concerns that mainstream NZ music awards had become predictable and lacking in adventurousness we decided to take action. The Alternatuis are given to NZ musicians that we feel deserve acclaim but aren't receiving it. The judging criteria for the awards are a strictly guarded secret but are rumoured to be completely subjective. Even the award categories change from year to year.

Winners of the 2006 Alternatuis, who didn't know until after the awards were made that they had been in the running, included Steve Abel, Dudley Benson, Chris Knox and The Mint Chicks. At least two of these artists subsequently placed Alternatui winner stickers on the front of their CD releases. Visit The Beach Radio Blog to find out about the 2006 winners and their reaction.

January 2007 marked my 10th anniversary of living on Waiheke. I shifted here thinking I'd stay a couple of years and now I can't contemplate living anywhere else. One of the things I like most about being here is my involvement in Beach Radio. You can find out more about the station at http://waihekeradio.blogspot.com.

I host a couple of different radio shows. Island Life, is the station's current affairs magazine show. This show has a real community focus and over 4 years of involvement I have interviewed many many islanders involved in a wide range of community groups, issues and events. The show highlights just how much people do on this island for the sake of the community and to preserve the uniqueness of Waiheke. To get a sense of what the Island Life show is all about check out our regular chat with Waiheke Coast Guard, local folk musician Bill Whall playing live, and an interview I'm particularly proud of with island peace activist Maynie Thompson.

The other show, Counting The Beat is a NZ music show on Sunday nights at 6pm. This also has a community focus. Each May, to mark NZ Month Month, we feature a series of Waiheke musicians playing live in our studio. The series is called Live On The Beach and you can download the 2007 performances by Chris Orange, Ian Simpson, Mamacan and Rattleshack.

The same things that draw me to local radio draw me to Waihekpedia. I like the idea of a place for us to tell our own stories.
