Baroona

The Baroona ferry plied the Waiheke run from the 1930s until she was laid up with an engine failure in 1965. She did return to the Waiheke service for a time but was later replaced by larger ferries able to handle the increase in passengers to the island. The Baroona went on to serve on the Devonport run for many years.

The Baroona was built in Australia in 1904. She served variously as a coastal cargo ship, an inter-island trader in Samoa and a deep-water trawler for Sanfords before serving Waiheke as a ferry. Still an icon of the gulf, she is now on dry land, converted to a themed pirate restaurant in Manukau city.

A meeting is being held at Lazy Lounge on Thursday, Sept 27th at 4pm, to discuss the possibility of combining some functions of the many small islands food co-ops. The logic is to gain greater purchasing power (better prices) and streamline the activities to free up time, which could instead be used to explore other creative co-operative ventures.

Some research has been done and there are some purchasing numbers available already from one of the major suppliers.

If anyone is interested in this project drop an email to [mailto:jms@ihug.co.nz James Samuel] and he can put you in touch with Mandy and others who are heading this up.

Denise is candidate in the upcoming local body elections, she is standing for election as the Auckland City Councilor for the Hauraki Gulf Islands.

Denise is also an announcer on [[Beach Radio]]. She features every Saturday morning on a slot named Talking Rubbish, sharing news, ideas and opinions on waste management. In addition Denise is one of the hosts of the [[Beach Radio]] show ''Island Life'', profiling local people, events and issues.
