== Editing basics ==

Before editing any page in Waihekepedia, contributors must read [http://www.waihekepedia.com/index.php?title=Guidelines our guidelines for contribution]. This is critical if we are to keep Waihekepedia a reliable source of information about one of the greatest islands on earth.

== Add a new page ==

Type the word or phrase you want to add in the search box on the left and click go. This will take you to a page not found page with a message at the top "No page with '''this exact title''' exists, trying full text search." Click on the '''this exact title''' to create a new page with the name that you searched for.

== Start editing ==

To start editing a MediaWiki page, click the Edit this page (or just edit) link at one of its edges. This brings you to the edit page: a page with a text box containing the wikitext - the editable code from which the server produces the finished page.

== Type your changes ==

You can just type your text. However, also using basic wiki markup (described in the next section) to make links and do simple formatting adds to the value of your contribution.

[http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Formatting# Go here for help with formatting your text ]

== Preview before saving ==

When you have finished, click Show preview to see how your changes will look before you make them permanent. Repeat the edit/preview process until you are satisfied, then click Save page and your changes will be immediately applied to the article.

== Formatting your text ==

[http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Formatting# Go here for help with formatting your text ]

== Adding and formatting images ==

Read about adding and formatting images here

[http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Images Adding and Formatting Images]

== Your page ==

While most users will use user names, utter anonymity kills the idea of a community wiki. So when you have edited your first page, go to the Recent Changes page and click on your user name. A page for your details will come up. You don't need to put your real name but let other editors and users know something about you and your interests.

== Setting the date ==

By default Waihekepedia will use GMT. This will be evident if the recent changes is 12 hours out. To set the date click [http://waihekepedia.com/index.php?title=Special:Preferences here]. Click "time zone" Click the "fill in from browser" button and click save.

:Bruce - great to see the front page opened up. I've put it on my watchlist and have also changed my prefs to email out any changes to pages on my watchlist. If there's a couple of people 'watching' like this it's pretty quick to rollback wayward front-page destruction .. and seeing as we don't have anonymous edits on it's usually just a newbie mistake anyways. Thanks Mike - I think it makes sense - we're all keeping an eye on proceedings, which seem to be proceeding very well actually - thanks again for you input and I must catch your radio show - has Barry got the station streaming yet or can we maybe save your shows as MP3?, I plan to incorporate a Flash MP3 player to embed in pages soon and possibly a podcasting system - thoughts ?[[User:bruced|bruced]]
:Bruce - i've actually been working on getting the stations streaming back up and we've recently been testing it out amongst ourselves; hopefully we will go public with it again soon after my return. We have been doing some podcasts of local musicians and some interviews that you can get via our blog @ http://waihekeradio.blogspot.com - we're using Archive.org for the podcasts. A long, north-facing ocean beach, Onetangi is said by Google Earth (TM), if you include the nudie bit, to be 1.87km long, along the high water mark.

Said to be the site of a great battle in pre-European days, Onetangi is often translated as Weeping Sands.

Praised for its beauty by most users, it is listed by local authorities as having one of the worst erosion problems and some of the cleanest water in the Auckland region.

For many years it has been the site of the celebrated [[Onetangi Beach Races]]. In 2008 the Beach Races are likely to be held on Waitangi Day.
