The Races and Family Fun Day first started on Waiheke about 100 years ago. It was stopped in 1924 because local authorities decided the people of the time were gambling too much money! Since 1998 it has been organised by [[Waiheke Rotary Club]] Inc and more recently by a sub-committee, Onetangi Beach Races Inc. It is a hugely popular day raising funds for charity and providing a wonderful, fun, community day.

Horse Racing is not the only attraction, you'll see tractors and Sealegs battling it out, waiters, wheelbarrows and people in general all racing along the beach - even a dragon, everyone is welcome to join in. The world's largest Tug-o-War involved 25,000 people - a few less than this at the Races but it doesn't feel like it! Sandworks competitions for all ages, A Big Dig, Fashion in the Field and Mad Hatter (under 10s make a hat and bring it with you) competitions and much, much more.

Giant wheelbarrow raffle - full of goodies, win and wheel away the barrow too!

Free entry to the Races (Race Packs $20) and free entry to all competitions, great prizes to be won. Silent Auction and plenty of great raffles. Stalls and food stalls, cake stall and sausage sizzle.

The races were originally scheduled for Sunday 28 February, but were postponed due to the chance of a tsunami resulting from the Chilean earthquake that morning.

She ran her own practise in Denmark, Western Australia, for four years before moving to Waiheke Island in 2005.

As a yoga teacher, Helen's 2001 study on the effects of yoga practise on hope and optimism in women residing in maximum security prisons formed the basis of her dissertation, "The effect of yoga on hope and optimism" and is widely referred to as one of a handful of qualitative studies executed worldwide.

Helen went on to work and study under Ricki Anderhuber, one of the pioneers of herbal medicine in Australia at the South Perth Naturopathic Clinic [http://www.spnc.com.au]. It was here she cultivated her passion for herbal medicine, the protection of endangered species and the use of alternatives in a sustainable practise.

As part of her ongoing commitment to research and continuing education, Helen participated in the American Botanical Councils' research expedition in 2004, held in conjunction with the Amazon Centre for Environmental Education and Research, to Peru, South America studying botanical medicine and indigenous knowledge from the Amazon and Andes.

Helen's research led to publications in the Australian Journal of Herbal Medicine [http://www.nhaa.org.au], "From plant to pill: A review of intellectual property rights, patent law and biodiversity", and "Botanical medicine of Peru: Pharmacy in the rain forest".

Helen is also a food and health writer who has had regular columns in the Sunday Star-Times and is currently the health columnist for the Waiheke Weekender on Waiheke Island. She is an experienced lecturer in health sciences and an engaging public speaker.

== Consultations ==
A naturopathic consultation with Helen is built around listening to an individual's health story. During an initial one-hour consultation, an in-depth case history is taken, including detailed medical, diet and exercise history, as well as lifestyle and occupational habits to gain a holistic appraisal of a person's health. At its conclusion, a treatment plan, which may include herbal medicine, homoeopathy or nutrition, is recommended and discussed. It's important to note that plans must reflect the person's goals, abilities, and limitations. One size does not fit all!

Follow-up consultations gauging the changes in a person's health concerns generally last thirty minutes. Their frequency is dependent on each individual case although, generally, Helen likes to see new patients fortnightly.

Salvage is a cafe/bar and the flagship premises of [[Pendragon Mall]] in the heart of [[Oneroa]]. It has quite a history. In the early 2000s it was the centre of a controversy over its liquor licence which upstairs neighbour Wayne Myer attempted to have revoked. The ensuing and often bitter dispute saw islanders march through the main street in support of the then-co-owner of the restaurant, Hamish Burbury. Both Mr Myer and Mr Burbury subsequently left the island.

It subsequently reopened as [[The Hungry Pig]].

I'd love to contribute to Waihekepedia, but firstly i'd like a more concrete statement about what license my content would be covered by/under. This page: [[Waihekepedia:General disclaimer]] suggests that you're using the GFDL, but it also seems pretty much the stock page that comes with a MediaWiki install. Will content in Waihekepedia be licensed under the GFDL or could the community also consider using the the CC-By-SA license instead that is used by many similar projects, notably WikiTravel? Personally I think that the CC-BY-SA is more in line with this kind of project and it would be good to think/discuss this in a bit more detail first before too much content is entered. Well... ok, here we go (again)I guess... :-) but it's important stuff if we're really a "community" because the community may actually be much larger than us in the short and hopefully the long term and getting the licensing right at the start helps sustain the type of information we're gathering, aggregating, creating here and can make that information freely available for as wide a use as possible. There are two licenses used for textual works that embody what is called '[http://www.gnu.org/copyleft/ copyleft]', the GFDL which the wiki is currently using but perhaps just by default as the MediaWiki software that runs this wiki is essentially a product of Wikipedia (which uses the GFDL), and the '''Creative Commons Attribution Share-Alike''' license, commonly referred to as CC-By-SA. Wikipedia uses the GFDL but primarily because when Wikipedia started there was no other option; the Creative Commons wasn't around yet. The GFDL is not a very good license for content of the nature of a Wikipedia, but it was all they had at the time so now they're pretty much stuck with it. A better license is perhaps the CC-By-SA, which you can see here: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/

For a more detailed look at perhaps why these licensing issues are important it might be worth taking a look at the [http://freedomdefined.org/Definition Free Cultural Works Definition] and seeing whether the values of Waihekepedia align. One of the difficulties with the GFDL is that is requires that texts that are printed out be printed out with a copy of the license -- which is about 10 pages of semi-legalese ramblings, which doesn't make much sense for small articles that you may want in an information center in Artworks. The CC-By-SA is really designed more for this type of content, whereas the GFDL is originally for larger software documentation.

The Creative Commons is working with Te Whāinga Aronui The Council for the Humanities to create New Zealand jurisdiction-specific licenses from the generic Creative Commons licenses. We could be one of the first sites to use the new NZ Ported CC-By-SA and possibly participate in the process. How will the few people who are currently on participating on the wiki come to some concensus on these types of decisions? It doesn't seem like something to just "be bold" about, but it's important to get it sorted at the start and make people aware of the license that their content is under. Currently it's a bit hidden. Morena Countrymike, I'd love to have a chat and The Lazy Lounge seems as good a place as any. I am guessing that at the moment you are not in the possession of a Tardis and as I see you posted at 3am that you are still away. Also Dalek Snowden's presence on the island for his mayoral campaign may make landing a Tardis near the Lazy Lounge somewhat dangerous at the moment.

In the interim would it pay to remove the licensing section. Yes it is the standard mediawiki install. If it is your esteemed recomendation that we should adopt CC then I am prepared to put it to the vote.

When I came up with the idea of waihekepedia the last thing on my mind was something I owned. This has to be owned by the people of Waiheke. Let us just say that we are guardians of the project until such time as an entity evolves that can take it over on behalf of the community.

My timestamps are off because i'm currently in the US on a bit of a holiday but will be back later next week. We can keep a watch on when the license is ported for NZ then move to that... be one of the first... that would be great. There is a way to add a license note to all pages on MediaWiki it's a setting somewhere in Localsetting.php or somewhere I seem to remember but when I get back I'll look into it a bit more and help draft some stuff on it. If we do move to CC-By-SA it also means that I can bring over some of the wiki newbie tutorials that I've worked on at WikiEducator to help people get their feet wet in the wiki environment. I'd also be keen to see if we could arrange some free workshops; i've recently run one for a number of Pacific Island educators, teaching them how to use MediaWiki and it went down a charm. spam seems to be increasing quite steadily -- which could be read as a somewhat good sign I suppose -- someone's paying attention. :I don't have a problem with a captcha, although there should be a mechanism for blind users to email someone to request an account. However, the spam is low volume so far, so I'm not sure if its a bot or a person.

:Given the response times to spam so far, we'd be in real trouble if a bot started pumping out several pages a second. The solution to this would be to have a lawbot watching for excessive edit rates and blocking any such account until an admin can investigate. As far as I know, there is no such feature built in to MediaWiki, but there are such bots running on Wikipedia and we could probably borrow one. However, database structures have changed over the years, and I don't know if a current bot will run correctly on such an old version of MediaWiki.

Hey all - I agree with the captcha as the spam is getting annoying - however I have tried the two extensions available and cant get either of them working - mostly because we are running an older version of Mediawik - it may have to either wait until we upgrade or may requrie someone with more technical expertise with Wikis than me. What I have done in the interim as add a javascript confirm to the registration screen to hopefully stop bots registering - if anyone is getting through that it most likely will be a person = welcome to Gadfium as admin[[User:Bruced|Bruced]]

I came up with the idea of a Waiheke Island website as I was disappointed by the self-serving drivel of the majority of websites that purport to represent Waiheke Island.

Most of these web sites have a commercial bias and do not reflect the unique nature of New Zealand's third most populated island.

Now that we're running a fairly recent version of mediaWiki, can you install http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:SpamBlacklist so we can set up a blacklist to prevent people adding spam links here. Just a block on any domain ending in .ru would probably be effective, but I suggest we start by copying the blacklist at http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Spam_blacklist. :I don't know the configuration you are using, but assuming you are running on a Linux machine with a Debian-based distro (such as Ubuntu), the extensions directory is probably at /var/lib/mediawiki/extensions, and your LocalSettings.php shold be at ll /etc/mediawiki/LocalSettings.php (copied from /var/lib/mediawiki/LocalSettings.php so it doesn't get overwritten by upgrades). The variable $IP will already be defined in LocalSettings.php.

I tried again with a domain picked at random from the wikimedia blacklist, and got a message saying "The page you wanted to save was blocked by the spam filter. I've protected it for admin editing only. Incorrect lines in this page could make editing any page with external links difficult.

I've tested this on my own mediawiki installation at home. It works. You can test it from an admin account; just try to create a page containing <nowiki>http://anything.ru</nowiki>. A page which already contains such a domain can still be edited, the filter only works on newly added links.

:Yes, seems to work. As far as upgrading mediawiki goes, I suggest just following the instructions at [http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Upgrading]. It should be fairly foolproof, so long as you remember to run the update script. My home wiki is using 1.13.3, because that's the version kubuntu gave me when I updated to the latest distro. That's near enough to identical with this version that I can use mine to experiment with changes for Waihekepedia without disrupting the live site. If you want, I'll upgrade it sometime in the next few days and let you know of any problems I encounter.

:I don't know much about Twitter, so probably can't help you there. There are a number of mediawiki extensions to deal with twitter: do any of these do what you want? Blue Kuka's sister I refer you to- In early March 1993 local Maori rights activist's Sonny Tawhiao and Christine Kuka laid a large log on the road stopping the new owners (Far Financial, ITT, E1) of Matakana Island from carrying out any logging. They claimed on behalf of their tribes under the instruction of the leadership Ngai Te Rangi, that the Iwi should be the owners of Matakana Island saying Matakana land was sacred and priceless to Maori. They got the land but the leaders put it in their own company. In 1998 Sonny Tawhiao suspected the tribal leadership were trying to get what they could for themselves. He called Wingate seeking information and was provided with documents on what the tribes leadership were up to. Sonny Tawhiao began to lobby his people. In July 1999 Mr Tawhiao's body was found in the back seat of his car in the Matakana forest. It appears certain people wanted to stop Sonny from talking about what the leadership were up to and the Privy Council case was months away. The police report written by the son in law of the Iwi accountant (12.5% shareholder) suggested his death was suicide. The police report suggested Sonny Tawhiao drove into the Matakana forest got into his back seat and set himself on fire.The police report was written by the Iwi accountant's son in law. With a dying child I am in no mood to negotiate.Think clear and ask around. We are this week.
