Sir Murray Halberg

Sir Murray Gordon Halberg, ONZ, MBE born July 7, 1933 is arguably Waiheke's most distinguished resident, however due to his own modesty it would be likely he would disagree.

Sir Murray's achievements in the sporting realm are impressive.

1958 New Zealand Sportsman of the Year - Due to being the first sub four-minute miler from New Zealand, 1958 British Empire and Commonwealth Games - Gold Medal for 3 miles, 1960 Rome Olympics - Gold Medal 5000 m , 1962 British Empire and Commonwealth Games - Gold Medal for 3 miles (Defended Title) and Team Flag Bearer.

He also attended the 1954 British Empire and Commonwealth Games, 1956 Melbourne Olympics, 1964 Tokyo Olympics as a member of the New Zealand team.

Despite this success the achievement Sir Murray is most proud of is the formation of his charitable trust (the Halberg Trust he founded in 1963) The mission of the trust, is to give equal opportunities to young people with disabilities to participate in sport. It has benefited many athletes over the years and has a list of high profile partners, friends and sponsors, including Westpac Bank which hosts the annual Halberg Sports Awards.

Sir Murray was made an MBE in 1961, and knighted in 1988.

In the June 2008 Queen's Birthday Honours, Halberg was appointed to New Zealand's highest honour, [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Order_of_New_Zealand The Order of New Zealand (ONZ)].

The following month he became only the fourth person to be awarded the Blake Medal for his more than 50 years' service to athletics, and to children with disabilities.

Born in Ekatahuna, Sir Murray spent the early part of his life living throughout Auckland and in the Mid 70's purchased a house near [[Hekerua Bay]] which he still owns today. Sir Murray worked for a number of years in the [[Oneroa]] Hardware store Tingeys on the site of the current [[Oneroa]] Four Square.

Sir Murray shares his time between Auckland and Waiheke having said recently "We do have a place in town, but we decided a long time ago that it was smarter to make Waiheke the place we lived and Auckland a place we visited.”

Murray is quoted as saying regarding Waiheke

“I have always thought Waiheke was a wonderful place to be, I have never had a disagreement with anyone living here. I think we are all united by a common love of the island."

He remembers rocky trips to Matiatia on the ferries [[Baroona]] and the [[Iris Moana]], and more spectacular aerial trips on the [[Sea Bee Air]] amphibians.

“On one trip, we flew out of Mechanics Bay and over to Pakatoa Island before landing in [[Surfdale]]. It was great to look down and see this beautiful island from the air and realise that was where I lived.”

== Introduction ==

[[Image:tihare_quickcat.jpg|right]]Prior to the introduction of the Quickcat, Auckland to Waiheke service was provided by a variety of older boats such as the [[Iris Moana]], [[Baroona]] and the Kestrel. The journey time could take anywhere between 1 to 2 hours depending on the vessel used, loading and sea conditions.

The introduction of the Quickcat in 1986 brought Waiheke much closer to Auckland City with an initial crossing time of 30 minutes. This was later increased to 35 minutes to reduce the wake created as the Quickcat arrived in Auckland City. Nevertheless the true commuter age had arrived.

During the first few years of service the Quickcat was the only "fast ferry" providing Waiheke service. The older slower boats filled in if the Quickcat was out of service and for peak commuter services.

== Collision in the Motuihe Channel ==

On the morning of the 4th of January 2005 at around 10.35a.m. five people were injured in a collision between a small charter fishing boat and the QUICKCAT. The 6.5-metre charter boat DR. HOOK and QUICKCAT collided in the Motuihe Channel, which separates Motutapu and Motuihe Islands,

The injured, from the pleasure craft, were transferred to the ferry. The Westpac rescue helicopter flew two of these people to hospital. Three other people with minor injuries were taken ashore from the ferry by the Police launch DEODAR 2 for medical treatment. The charter boat was holed on her port bow, and was towed in by a Coastguard rescue vessel. QUICKCAT continued her voyage to Waiheke Island.

Little Blue Penguin

Little blue penguin (Eudyptula minor), known to Maori as korora, are a regular sight in the waters around Waiheke. They are the smallest of penguin, rarely measuring more than 40cm. By day they are at sea, camouflaged in steel blue feathers. At night they come ashore and can be heard sqawking noisily under the [[Matiatia]] wharf some evenings. Little blues tend to mate for life.

In Māori it is the kererū, kūkū, or kukupa

Once abundant numbers have declined dramatically due to habitat loss and predators.

Good populations still exist in Waiheke.

Kereru are the only seed disperser of large fruits of trees such as the karaka and taraire. The Department of Conservation suggests the disappearance of the kereru would be a disaster for native forest generation.

Once an important food resource for Maori, the kereru, like all native birds, is these days protected and shows little fear of humans.

[[Image:Tihare_JetRaider.JPG|left|frame Jet Raider]]Fullers' only jet-propelled boat, the narrow mono-hull is affectionately known by some Waiheke commuters as the 'Tomb Raider', 'Vomit Comet' or 'Death Raider'. The aluminium ferry was built in 1991 by Wavemaster International Proprietary Limited, Henderson, West Australia. Tonnage: 227 gross.
It is now mainly used when the other fast ferries are out of action or on other duties.
It is widely accepted as the commuters' least favourite boat and crew apologise over the tannoy if they have had to bring her onto the Waiheke run.

The Dunny Club is an institution among Waiheke commuters. The term refers to the collection of commuters on the boats back to Waiheke in the early evening who choose to stand by the upper deck toilets and socialise for the duration of the trip home. The boat can be the [[Quickcat]] or the [[Superflyte]] (It's not practical on the [[Jet Raider]] or other Fullers boats) and club membership has, of course, changed over the years.

Its two-storyed pavilion is now home to the Waiheke Island Rugby Club. The park was the end result after years of often bitter debate over the future of field sports on the island.
