Hi Rocky. Greg here - welcome to WP. Why don't you put up a page on the Peer Support Group? Cheers. hackademic (admin)

Hi Rocky - Thanks for that update.. doh i searched for an existing street page but couldn't see one so i thought i would add one, i found the list online whilst looking for something else, i didnt think it was 100% and forgot to put a note on it for anyone who had a better list to throw it on . Since there is a current page, might be worth removing my duplicate im not sure - will stick to some of the other type of articles i think :) Cheers

Some interesting facts about Waiheke's Street Listing. There are 163 named roads on Waiheke. The most popular letter for the name is M with 19 , followed by T with 18 and W with 13. There are no roads/streets at all that start with the letter I, X, Y or Z. The most surprising of those is the I in that Waiheke Island has a Waiheke Road but no Island road.

A page for incidental and whimsical facts about Waiheke
Do you know how many steps there are up Jacob's Ladder? Or down to Fisherman's Rock? Or how many power cuts the island had last year? Or the time it takes to get to the Barrier by tinnie? Or where there's a good feed of mussels? Add your miscellaneous tidbits of interest to the Island Trivia page.

Have a seat
Dozens of roadside seats have sprung up around the island in within a couple of years, as far out as past Cactus Bay even - and all built thanks to the generosity of an anonymous benefactor.

Penguin rescue
During the building of the new wharf at Matiatia in 1992, 13-year-old Tom Delamore came back from a soccer game in town to find diggers moving the rock wall. Tom was horrified at the imminent destruction of a nest of little blue penguin and, as a result of his protest, work ceased. The penguin were relocated to Tiritiri Matangi Island.
Little Blue Penguin still live in the Matiatia seawall and can be heard at dusk.

Oh, Rhett
Legend has it Vivienne Leigh (Gone with the Wind) once visited the Harbour Masters house at Matiatia, coming to the island on board the Auckland mayor's yacht. The mayor had brought
her to visit Fred Alison, the landowner at Matiatia.

Behind The Green Door
Local legend has it that the green barn down at Matiatia was once upon a time something far more entertaining than a mechanic's workshop. Can anyone remember the precise shenanigans that went on in there?

Starlight
Among stars rumoured or proved to have visited the island during the first America's Cup to be raced on the gulf (2001?) were Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman (true), and Jack Nicholson (maybe true - rumoured to have choppered in, landing on the rear deck of a super super yacht in Oneroa Bay). Lenny Henry and Dawn French definitely did spend some months here, hidden away in a leased house at the bottom end but also seen chilling out with coffee at Salvage. Bill Gates came ashore at Little Oneroa for supplies (true). He was recognised by teenager Eric Hillman who said hello and Bill shook his hand. More recently Justin Timberlake was seen walking along Onetangi Beach. Apparently Neil Young once had his hair cut in Oneroa and Noam Chomsky has also visited our fair isle. Leonard Cohen was spotted in Salvage in 2008.

Celebrity weddings on Waiheke have included rugby internationals Zinzan Brooke, Jonah Lomu and Glen Marsh, and television presenter Wendy Petrie.

Seahorses
Seahorses live under the wharf at Matiatia, a fact confirmed by island diver Sid Thickpenny. They have been seen living in an old shopping trolley. All sorts of other miscellaneous bits and pieces, many dropped by accident, lie under the wharf.

Seahorses have also been recently seen by numerous people in Enclosure Bay for the first time in decades.

No Sheep Shaggers Here
Apparently the act of sheep shagging is not permitted.

Manganese mine
Manganese/Manganite was mined in the late 1800s in the Maunganui area, near the highest point on Waiheke (231 metres)

Slumming It
Graeme Hart, who tops the New Zealand rich list, was seen slumming it with Waiheke commuters on the Quickcat. Must have been too windy to run his helicopter or is he concerned about his carbon footprint.

Waiheke Island is on Auckland's east coast and is a sheltered island with sheltered beaches and reef breaks that in general has inconsistent surf.

Although Waiheke is known for its beautiful white sand beaches on the northern side, it is not normally associated with being a surf spot however this does not mean you cannot get some very good surf here. The 2 beaches best suited for surfing are on the northern side of the island - Oneroa and Onetangi. Onetangi the more consistent of the two with Oneroa's surf being dependent on weather conditions. The is no viable surfing on the southern beaches as they tend to be tidal.

Spring and Summer provide the best surfing conditions on Waiheke.

The best wind direction is from the southwest. The beaches tend to receive distant groundswells and the ideal direction is from the northeast. The beach break provides left and right handers as well as left and right hand reef breaks.

The best time to surf Waiheke is around high tide, this also tends to be the best swimming time.

The very best surfing can be found when there is a tropical cyclone (the bigger the cyclone the bigger the surf) in the Pacific, usually 2-5 days after this passes through the pacific you will find some of the very best surfing Waiheke has to offer. On these days you can expect large swells at Oneroa and Onetangi - up to 3-5 meters have been recorded.

Note: As swimming at Waiheke is generally extremely safe, there is no Surf Lifesaving Patrol so use caution on days like this.

The surf tends to be 1-2m at best (often none) which makes Waiheke a safe place to learn to surf and swim , however the surf is to inconsistent to allow surf schools or a one off random trip without checking the weather. In general if other Auckland beaches (especially Orewa or Red Beach) are experiencing good surf then Waiheke will be as well.

You can check out the Waiheke surf forecast here.

Below are some images captured when Cyclone Ivy (a relatively small category 1-2 storm) passed through the Pacific near Vanuatu.

The Stony Ridge / Waiheke quarry is situated on a hill overlooking the intersection of Onetangi, Ostend and O'Brien Roads. This quarry produces base course crushed rock material for use in road construction and the building industry in Waiheke.

The stone has a orange/brown colour and the decades of use all over the island make them a unique icon of Waiheke. Although the majority of roads on Waiheke are now sealed, there are still a number of roads that use this stone as the primary surface and all roads on Waiheke contain at least some stone from this quarry.

Due to its aesthetically pleasing look ( as compared to other quarried stone) the stone can also be widely seen and is commonly used in walls, gardens, driveways and even some building construction.

The quarry has been owned and operated by Phil and Lila Mathewson since 1995 and was purchased by Central Quarries Ltd in 2005. Central Quarries is part of the ever expanding Central Topsoil and Landscaping Supplies group owned by Wayne Rissetto.
Whilst cleary not a part of Waiheke, Mechanics Bay plays a vital part in the Waiheke Community being the home base of the Auckland Rescue Helicopter Trust, Marine Rescue Centre , CoastGuard, Police Maritime Unit - Auckland Water Police and Police Air Support Unit - Eagle Police Helicopterall of which provide a vital service to the Waiheke Community.
Historically, Mechanics Bay was also the home base of Sea Bee Air which flew passengers and freight via amphibious aircraft from Mechanics Bay to Surfdale and throughout the gulf.

Artworks : Location address: 2 Korora Rd Oneroa

Artworks Waiheke Island is a community arts and cultural centre in Oneroa, developed from what was once a Mitre 10 timber outlet owned by Tony Pope. It was bought by Auckland City Council in 2003 for $2 million. The Mitre 10 branch was moved to Ostend and subsequently changed to a Placemakers store.

Artworks over the years has served as a great community asset and arts and cultural hub.

Among its facilities are the Waiheke Library, the Waiheke Community Art Gallery, the Waiheke Community Cinema, Artworks Theatre, Waiheke Radio, Ajadz Indian restaurant, Tanya Batt's Once Upon an Island Story Centre, the office of the Waste Resource Trust, the Waiheke Visitor Information Centre and Whittaker's Musical Experience.

In November 2008 a draft strategic plan for the site was released with the vision proposed to be:

"an arts and cultural centre that serves the local community and reflects Waiheke Island's unique identity, by providing a place for the exchange of ideas and community participation in a range of activities".

The plan sets out five strategic objectives:

* continuing to develop Artworks as an arts and cultural centre that reflects, and is supported by the local community
* supporting the local community by providing opportunities for their participation in arts and cultural activities
* attracting visitors through arts and cultural activities
* recognising and promoting Artworks as part of council's network of facilities and venues
* maximising opportunities for integration between Artworks and the new Waiheke community library.

The draft will become final mid 2009 where action points and development plans will be implemented.

Sir Murray Gordon Halberg, ONZ, MBE born July 7, 1933 is arguably Waiheke's most distinguished resident, however due to his own modesty it would be likely he would disagree.

Sir Murray's achievements in the sporting realm are impressive.

1958 New Zealand Sportsman of the Year - Due to being the first sub four-minute miler from New Zealand, 1958 British Empire and Commonwealth Games - Gold Medal for 3 miles, 1960 Rome Olympics - Gold Medal 5000 m , 1962 British Empire and Commonwealth Games - Gold Medal for 3 miles (Defended Title) and Team Flag Bearer.

He also attended the 1954 British Empire and Commonwealth Games, 1956 Melbourne Olympics, 1964 Tokyo Olympics as a member of the New Zealand team.

Despite this success the achievement Sir Murray is most proud of is the formation of his charitable trust (the Halberg Trust he founded in 1963) The mission of the trust, is to give equal opportunities to young people with disabilities to participate in sport. It has benefited many athletes over the years and has a list of high profile partners, friends and sponsors, including Westpac Bank which hosts the annual Halberg Sports Awards.

Sir Murray was made an MBE in 1961, and knighted in 1988.

In the June 2008 Queen's Birthday Honours, Halberg was appointed to New Zealand's highest honour, The Order of New Zealand (ONZ).

The following month he became only the fourth person to be awarded the Blake Medal for his more than 50 years' service to athletics, and to children with disabilities.

Born in Ekatahuna, Sir Murray spent the early part of his life living throughout Auckland and in the Mid 70's purchased a house near Hekerua Bay which he still owns today. Sir Murray worked for a number of years in the Oneroa Hardware store Tingeys on the site of the current Oneroa Four Square.

Sir Murray shares his time between Auckland and Waiheke having said recently "We do have a place in town, but we decided a long time ago that it was smarter to make Waiheke the place we lived and Auckland a place we visited.”

Murray is quoted as saying regarding Waiheke

“I have always thought Waiheke was a wonderful place to be, I have never had a disagreement with anyone living here. I think we are all united by a common love of the island."

He remembers rocky trips to Matiatia on the ferries Baroona and the Iris Moana, and more spectacular aerial trips on the Sea Bee Air amphibians.

“On one trip, we flew out of Mechanics Bay and over to Pakatoa Island before landing in Surfdale. It was great to look down and see this beautiful island from the air and realise that was where I lived.”
History
In the early 1950s fires were common enough on Waiheke to prompt residents into action. But authorities on the mainland saw it differently - Waiheke did not qualify for a brigade.

::However, volunteer bucket brigades were formed with five villages each receiving five knapsack pumps and five buckets. It was recommended that at strategic points throughout the district fire gongs, in the form of steel brake drums or similar, be installed. - Gulf News
A collection of Waiheke community groups is calling for The Esplanade between Blackpool and Surfdale to be made safe for walkers, horse riders and cyclists by closing it to vehicle traffic.

Community Board member Eileen Evans, who is leading the call, says, “People are telling me they want to see a true esplanade - a place where everybody can walk or ride along the waterfront, safely and in peace. At the moment it’s a racetrack, a wasted opportunity that no family in their right mind would want to use”.

“The road would still be there, virtually unchanged. It would still be available in an emergency, simply by removing a few lockable bollards. We’ve spoken to the Waiheke Police and they have said that they would be happy with this arrangement”.

So Since I LOVE Waiheke and have been spending every summer of my life on Waiheke since before I was born ( as my mums passenger) and given my family's long association with Waiheke ( best part of 100 years) I believe I can add to some of the knowledge that this site hopes to capture.

The picturesque remains of the Rahiri, a once-proud member of the Hauraki Gulf scow fleet, lie semi-submerged in front of Piritahi Marae at the western end of Blackpool. It is freely accessible at all but high tide, although signs warn against climbing onboard.

The Rahiri (Maritime Id 530020057) built 1907 by David M. Darroch, Omaha (NZ) a well known scow builder. The scow was originally named DAPHNE and renamed in 1926 with original dimensions of Length 66'9' (approx 21 meters) and a beam of 18'5' (approx 5.5 meters) but has shrunken considerably over the years since being beached.

Scows are wooden vessels, at first sail powered but later motorised and almost flat-bottomed.
This enabled them to work inland on the river systems or shallow areas (such as Blackpool). The Rahiri was used extensively throughout the Auckland region for over 70 years transporting all manner of cargo.
