After a long rehabilitation, Blake was released from care but continued to push himself in a determined effort to recover and return to the boating he missed. In 2002 he moved back to his childhood island of Waiheke from Invercargill. His remarkable recovery continued and included an 11km swim from Onetangi to Oneroa. The Waiheke Community Radio Trust has established Waiheke Radio as a not-for-profit, community radio service for Waiheke Island. This service provides radio programming that reflects the unique character and needs of the Waiheke community. In addition the service offers facilities, advice, training and technical support for Waiheke people to make and broadcast their own radio programmes.

The Trust has been granted a month-by-month community lease on a space in Artworks, the old Beach Radio site, and has made numerous modifications to that space to serve the community with a fully functional radio station.

Waiheke Radio broadcasts on Low Power FM on 107.4 from Oneroa to Surfdale, and 88.3 from Surdale to Onetangi.
Woolworths (often shortened to 'Woolies') shares a building with Waiheke Placemakers and is by far the largest supermarket on the island. It belongs to the Woolworths New Zealand chain.

On Saturday 6 June 2009 part of the building caught fire and caused the closure of the supermarket due to fire and water damage.
Woolworths NZ for the first time offered Waiheke Islanders access to its internet shopping service, something which has been available to all other New Zealanders for many years. The temporary Waiheke service however is available for pick-ups only.

The supermarket re-opened on 19 June 2009 with a reduced floor area and slightly shorter opening times.
The internet shopping option was withdrawn.

A page for incidental and whimsical facts about Waiheke
Do you know how many steps there are up Jacob's Ladder? Or down to Fisherman's Rock? Or how many power cuts the island had last year? Or the time it takes to get to the Barrier by tinnie? Or where there's a good feed of mussels? Add your miscellaneous tidbits of interest to the Island Trivia page.

Have a seat
Dozens of roadside seats have sprung up around the island in within a couple of years, as far out as past Cactus Bay even - and all built thanks to the generosity of an anonymous benefactor.

Penguin rescue
During the building of the new wharf at Matiatia in 1992, 13-year-old Tom Delamore came back from a soccer game in town to find diggers moving the rock wall. Tom was horrified at the imminent destruction of a nest of little blue penguin and, as a result of his protest, work ceased. The penguin were relocated to Tiritiri Matangi Island.
Little Blue Penguin still live in the Matiatia seawall and can be heard at dusk.

Oh, Rhett
Legend has it Vivienne Leigh (Gone with the Wind) once visited the Harbour Masters house at Matiatia, coming to the island on board the Auckland mayor's yacht. The mayor had brought
her to visit Fred Alison, the landowner at Matiatia.

Behind The Green Door
Local legend has it that the green barn down at Matiatia was once upon a time something far more entertaining than a mechanic's workshop. Can anyone remember the precise shenanigans that went on in there?

Starlight
Among stars rumoured or proved to have visited the island during the first America's Cup to be raced on the gulf (2001?) were Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman (true), and Jack Nicholson (maybe true - rumoured to have choppered in, landing on the rear deck of a super super yacht in Oneroa Bay). Lenny Henry and Dawn French definitely did spend some months here, hidden away in a leased house at the bottom end but also seen chilling out with coffee at Salvage. Bill Gates came ashore at Little Oneroa for supplies (true). He was recognised by teenager Eric Hillman who said hello and Bill shook his hand. More recently Justin Timberlake was seen walking along Onetangi Beach. Apparently Neil Young once had his hair cut in Oneroa and Noam Chomsky has also visited our fair isle. Leonard Cohen was spotted in Salvage in 2008.

Celebrity weddings on Waiheke have included rugby internationals Zinzan Brooke, Jonah Lomu and Glen Marsh, and television presenter Wendy Petrie.

Seahorses
Seahorses live under the wharf at Matiatia, a fact confirmed by island diver Sid Thickpenny. They have been seen living in an old shopping trolley. All sorts of other miscellaneous bits and pieces, many dropped by accident, lie under the wharf.

Seahorses have also been recently seen by numerous people in Enclosure Bay for the first time in decades.

No Sheep Shaggers Here
Apparently the act of sheep shagging is not permitted.

Manganese mine
Manganese/Manganite was mined in the late 1800s in the Maunganui area, on the Awaawaroa side of Mt Maunganui, the summit of which is the highest point on Waiheke (231 metres).

Slumming It
Graeme Hart, who tops the New Zealand rich list, was seen slumming it with Waiheke commuters on the Quickcat. Must have been too windy to run his helicopter or is he concerned about his carbon footprint.

Speed dating at 6 am
see http://www.tewahanui.info/wordpress2/?p=1109

Streets and Roads
Some interesting facts about Waiheke's Street Listing. There are 163 named roads on Waiheke. The most popular letter for the name is M with 19 , followed by T with 18 and W with 13. There are no roads/streets at all that start with the letter I, X, Y or Z. The most surprising of those is the I in that Waiheke Island has a Waiheke Road but no Island road. Could be one for a future development.

Queue Jumping
Queue jumping for many Waiheke Islanders waiting for the ferry range from casual to well practised art.

Types of Jump

The dunny jump - pretending to go to the loo
The rubbish jump - taking rubbish to the bin at the front of the queue.
The pretend visitor jump - Is this the Ferry to Waiheke?
Smokers Jump - Walking to front of queue to put cigarette out.

feel free to add more...
Buffalo Girls - Going around behind the toilets.
Arklow vs. Maclean
My former partner in Arklow Peter Spencer and his brother John have land there, you know them. In 1997 I purchased two properties behind the shops in Oneroa from partners of Adrian Chisholm.
Others you should be focusing on are the Mongrel Mob and their very serious issues. The leaders of Ngai Terangi and their accountant appear to have run off with about $60m which should have gone to the tribe. And the Mob and the Black Power want the Iwi's money back. I have been encouraging them to sit tight and observe Arklow's effort to bring them to account. Rex Mainey (Matakana Island Taikato-his uncle Marsh died in my arms and I was the only pakeha to talk at his tangi),(founding member President Aotearoa), Fats ( Sergeant of Arms), Blue Kuka (Matakana) and the other members unnamed are 'mad as snakes and keen as mustard' to get this matter sorted out. The Arklow site is part of that process. Blue Kuka's sister I refer you to- In early March 1993 local Maori rights activist's Sonny Tawhiao and Christine Kuka laid a large log on the road stopping the new owners (Far Financial, ITT, E1) of Matakana Island from carrying out any logging. They claimed on behalf of their tribes under the instruction of the leadership Ngai Te Rangi, that the Iwi should be the owners of Matakana Island saying Matakana land was sacred and priceless to Maori. They got the land but the leaders put it in their own company. In 1998 Sonny Tawhiao suspected the tribal leadership were trying to get what they could for themselves. He called Wingate seeking information and was provided with documents on what the tribes leadership were up to. Sonny Tawhiao began to lobby his people. In July 1999 Mr Tawhiao's body was found in the back seat of his car in the Matakana forest. It appears certain people wanted to stop Sonny from talking about what the leadership were up to and the Privy Council case was months away. The police report written by the son in law of the Iwi accountant (12.5% shareholder) suggested his death was suicide. The police report suggested Sonny Tawhiao drove into the Matakana forest got into his back seat and set himself on fire. The police report was written by the Iwi accountant's son in law. With a dying child I am in no mood to negotiate.Think clear and ask around. We are this week.
== Arklow vs. Maclean ==

The primary objective of the Waste Resource Trust, located at Artworks, is to educate and inform residents, visitors, schools, community groups and local businesses on issues surrounding recycling and waste management on Waiheke Island and to offer advice and practical solutions.

The end result is to reduce the amount of waste we send back to Auckland landfills.

The Waste Resource Trust is affiliated with Clean Stream Waiheke Ltd, a community-based organisation which in 2001 won the seven-year rubbish collection and recycling contracts on the island, formerly held by Waste Management Ltd. Among the trustees is one of the doyens of Waiheke politics, Gordon Hodson.

Each year the Waste Resource Trust organises Junk to Funk, Waiheke's annual wearable arts show that makes recycling its centrepiece theme.

History
Waiheke had its own landfill site until the late 1980s, when the Waiheke County Council, which ran the island administratively, closed it. Subesquent recycling and composting initiatives eventually became ineffective through a lack of incentives to contractors.

In 1998 a group of frustated islanders formed the Waste Resource Trust to help develop a sense of community responsibility for the vexed issue of the island's waste stream. An audit of the waste stream and a survey of residents confirmed for trustees there was huge potential in recycling on the island.

At about the turn of the century, Auckland City developed, through consultation with islanders, the Waiheke Waste Management Plan, which set in place a four-year for the reduction of island waste.

In 2000, in association with Kaitaia's Community Business and Education Centre, the trust proposed to take over management of the waste stream, a proposal rejected by Auckland City, which put the contracts out for tender.

In 2001, Clean Stream Waiheke Ltd, a joint venture between WRT and CBEC, was awarded the waste collection and transfer station managment contracts.

In 2009, the community-owned organisation lost the tender process, with the council awarding the $22 million contract to Australian multinational Transpacific Industries, on the grounds its tender was $600,000 lower. Outraged, islanders marched on the City Development Committee meeting on June 11, 2009. The councillors made the decision to a deafening cry of "Shame!"

The organisation
The Waste Resource Trust employs 16 full-time staff, a number of part-timers and two community waste educators.

From its website:

::"We are meeting our social objectives. Our staff have a skills-based pay collective employment agreement which ensures that they receive training that is useful and portable. Clean Stream Waiheke Ltd’s annual turnover is in excess of $1,000,000 per annum and we contribute over $500,000 in wages and services paid within our local community."

The future
A $3 million proposal is in the pipeline to develop the Waiheke Transfer Station into a full resource recovery park.

Auckland City's take on the project can be found here.

Aaron Bhatnagar is an Auckland City Councillor representing Hobson Ward. He is Chairman of the City Development Committee at Auckland City, and a member of the Citizens & Ratepayers majority bloc on council.

Aaron Bhatnagar was caught doctoring the online encyclopedia Wikipedia to paint his opponents in a bad light during the 2007 local body elections.

Using the alias of Barzini _ a power-hungry psychopath from Mario Puzo's novel The Godfather _ Mr Bhatnagar created entries for his Action Hobson opponents in the Hobson ward and made unflattering changes to the entry for Mayor Dick Hubbard.

After winning a council seat and watching Action Hobson councillors Christine Caughey and Richard Simpson go down to a C&R rout in Hobson, Mr Bhatnagar tried to remove the Wikipedia entries for his opponents at 3am the following morning.
In June 2009 Aaron Bhatnager chaired the City Development Committee that voted to disqualify Clean Stream from the Waste Tender for Waiheke Island ending a 13 year contribution to Waiheke waste reduction.

The contract was subsequently awarded to TPI. The decision is currently before the Auckland Transition Agency.
