In 2010 she became chief executive of Women in Film and Television NZ.

Blake Scott

An island identity and member of a well-known Waiheke family, Blake Scott is also a remarkable survivor. A successful commercial fisherman, Blake was fixing up a boat in 2001 when he fell six metres, landing head-first. His left side paralysed, he spent months on life support, spending periods unconscious.

After a long rehabilitation, Blake was released from care but continued to push himself in a determined effort to recover and return to the boating he missed. In 2002 he moved back to his childhood island of Waiheke from Invercargill. His remarkable recovery continued and included an 11km swim from [[Onetangi]] to [[Oneroa]]. In the end he returned to his beloved sea in an amphibious craft which is a regular sight at [[Onetangi Beach]].

Blake is the son of legendary island fisherman [[Farley Scott]] and brother of charter fisherman [[Phil Scott]].

Chocolate Fish is the longstanding island musical pairing of [[Pete Reilly]] and [[Anu Grace]], now an island band playing a bohemian Mambo Jazz mix at venues and functions.

Joining Pete and Anu in the current ( Sept 2007) line up is bassist [[Chris Orange]] and drummer [[Alain Koetsier]]. [[Manuel Kahura]] is also a longstanding member of Chocolate Fish, playing drums.

This service provides radio programming that reflects the unique character and needs of the Waiheke community. The supermarket re-opened on 19 June 2009 with a reduced floor area and slightly shorter opening times.
The internet shopping option was withdrawn.

Dozens of roadside seats have sprung up around the island in within a couple of years, as far out as past Cactus Bay even - and all built thanks to the generosity of an anonymous benefactor.

====Penguin rescue====
During the building of the new wharf at [[Matiatia]] in 1992, 13-year-old Tom Delamore came back from a soccer game in town to find diggers moving the rock wall. Tom was horrified at the imminent destruction of a nest of little blue penguin and, as a result of his protest, work ceased. The penguin were relocated to [[Tiritiri Matangi Island]].
[[Little Blue Penguin]] still live in the Matiatia seawall and can be heard at dusk.

Local legend has it that the green barn down at [[Matiatia]] was once upon a time something far more entertaining than a mechanic's workshop. Can anyone remember the precise shenanigans that went on in there?

====Starlight====
Among stars rumoured or proved to have visited the island during the first America's Cup to be raced on the gulf (2001?) were Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman (true), and Jack Nicholson (maybe true - rumoured to have choppered in, landing on the rear deck of a super super yacht in [[Oneroa Bay]]). Lenny Henry and Dawn French definitely did spend some months here, hidden away in a leased house at the bottom end but also seen chilling out with coffee at [[Salvage]]. Bill Gates came ashore at [[Little Oneroa]] for supplies (true). He was recognised by teenager Eric Hillman who said hello and Bill shook his hand. More recently Justin Timberlake was seen walking along Onetangi Beach. Apparently Neil Young once had his hair cut in Oneroa and Noam Chomsky has also visited our fair isle. Leonard Cohen was spotted in Salvage in 2008.

Celebrity weddings on Waiheke have included rugby internationals Zinzan Brooke, Jonah Lomu and Glen Marsh, and television presenter Wendy Petrie.

====Seahorses====
Seahorses live under the wharf at [[Matiatia]], a fact confirmed by island diver [[Sid Thickpenny]]. They have been seen living in an old shopping trolley. All sorts of other miscellaneous bits and pieces, many dropped by accident, lie under the wharf.

Seahorses have also been recently seen by numerous people in [[Enclosure Bay]] for the first time in decades.

Manganese/[[Manganite]] was mined in the late 1800s in the [[Maunganui]] area, on the Awaawaroa side of Mt Maunganui, the summit of which is the highest point on Waiheke (231 metres).

There are no roads/streets at all that start with the letter I, X, Y or Z. The most surprising of those is the I in that Waiheke Island has a Waiheke Road but no Island road. Could be one for a future development.

My former partner in Arklow Peter Spencer and his brother John have land there, you know them. In 1997 I purchased two properties behind the shops in Oneroa from partners of Adrian Chisholm.
Others you should be focusing on are the Mongrel Mob and their very serious issues. The leaders of Ngai Terangi and their accountant appear to have run off with about $60m which should have gone to the tribe. And the Mob and the Black Power want the Iwi's money back. I have been encouraging them to sit tight and observe Arklow's effort to bring them to account. Rex Mainey (Matakana Island Taikato-his uncle Marsh died in my arms and I was the only pakeha to talk at his tangi),(founding member President Aotearoa), Fats ( Sergeant of Arms), Blue Kuka (Matakana) and the other members unnamed are 'mad as snakes and keen as mustard' to get this matter sorted out. The Arklow site is part of that process. Blue Kuka's sister I refer you to- In early March 1993 local Maori rights activist's Sonny Tawhiao and Christine Kuka laid a large log on the road stopping the new owners (Far Financial, ITT, E1) of Matakana Island from carrying out any logging. They claimed on behalf of their tribes under the instruction of the leadership Ngai Te Rangi, that the Iwi should be the owners of Matakana Island saying Matakana land was sacred and priceless to Maori. Under plesk I can back up the whole wiki with one click of a button and restore it just as quickly so wrecking it is not a worry

The end result is to reduce the amount of waste we send back to Auckland landfills.

The Waste Resource Trust is affiliated with [[Clean Stream Waiheke Ltd]], a community-based organisation which in 2001 won the seven-year rubbish collection and recycling contracts on the island, formerly held by Waste Management Ltd. Among the trustees is one of the doyens of Waiheke politics, [[Gordon Hodson]].

Each year the Waste Resource Trust organises [[Junk to Funk]], Waiheke's annual wearable arts show that makes recycling its centrepiece theme.

== History ==

Waiheke had its own landfill site until the late 1980s, when the [[Waiheke County Council]], which ran the island administratively, closed it. Subesquent recycling and composting initiatives eventually became ineffective through a lack of incentives to contractors.

In 1998 a group of frustated islanders formed the Waste Resource Trust to help develop a sense of community responsibility for the vexed issue of the island's waste stream. An audit of the waste stream and a survey of residents confirmed for trustees there was huge potential in recycling on the island.

At about the turn of the century, Auckland City developed, through consultation with islanders, the Waiheke Waste Management Plan, which set in place a four-year for the reduction of island waste.

In 2000, in association with Kaitaia's Community Business and Education Centre, the trust proposed to take over management of the waste stream, a proposal rejected by Auckland City, which put the contracts out for tender.

In 2001, Clean Stream Waiheke Ltd, a joint venture between WRT and CBEC, was awarded the waste collection and transfer station managment contracts.

In 2009, the community-owned organisation lost the tender process, with the council awarding the $22 million contract to Australian multinational Transpacific Industries, on the grounds its tender was $600,000 lower. Outraged, islanders marched on the [http://www.tewahanui.info/wordpress2/?p=1918 City Development Committee meeting] on June 11, 2009. The councillors made the decision to a deafening cry of "Shame!"

== The organisation ==

The Waste Resource Trust employs 16 full-time staff, a number of part-timers and two community waste educators.

In a controversial decision in June 2009 the [[Aaron Bhatnagar]] chaired City Development Committee voted to disqualify Clean Stream from the tender process ending a 13 year contribution to Waiheke waste reduction.

Uploading pics

Hi Hack, good to catch up yesterday. I did try uploading a pic some time ago but my pic was too large and I don't know how to reduce it's size, or if that is possible. Cheers

Hack, congratulations, thats should be in NEWS shouldn't it??? I did get to the point with pics where I had it almost uploaded but I got the message that the pic was too large, and I don't know how to reduce the size of my pics. Is there a 'Wiki for dummies' book I can get hold of!!

Hi Gadfium - no, not looking for it - had trouble uploading it. Talked to other admins and they agreed we might try a pic of Waiheke on the main page and see how it went. Was trying to upload a pic of vines in front of Thumb Point but got error meesages instead. [[User:Hackademic|hackademic]]

Using the alias of [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/Barzini Barzini ] _ a power-hungry psychopath from Mario Puzo's novel The Godfather _ Mr Bhatnagar created entries for his Action Hobson opponents in the Hobson ward and made unflattering changes to the entry for Mayor Dick Hubbard.

After winning a council seat and watching Action Hobson councillors Christine Caughey and Richard Simpson go down to a C&R rout in Hobson, Mr Bhatnagar tried to remove the Wikipedia entries for his opponents at 3am the following morning.
