The iconic Baroona ferry plied the Waiheke run from the 1930s until she was laid up with an engine failure in 1965. She did return to the Waiheke service for a time but was later replaced by larger ferries able to handle the increase in passengers to the island. The Baroona went on to serve on the Devonport run for many years.

The Baroona was built in Australia in 1904. She served variously as a coastal cargo ship, an inter-island trader in Samoa and a deep-water trawler for Sanfords before serving Waiheke as a ferry. Remaining an icon of the gulf, she was moved to dry land on Great South Road in Manurewa, where she was converted to a pirate-themed restaurant. That business failed in 2007, and the Baroona was scrapped in July 2009.

The name lives on in Baroona Beer, brewed at the Waiheke Island Brewery at Wild On Waiheke (formerly called the Onetangi Road Vineyard).

Onetangi Reserve is more than 50ha of bush valley at the rear of the Onetangi wetlands, owned by Forest and Bird, protected under the Reserves Act and open to the public. Half a kilometre from Onetangi Beach, and between Scotts Tce and Waiheke Rd, the reserve can also be accessed from Fisher Road and Trig Hill Road. Once known as Eddie Brown's Bush after a former owner, the reserve is considered the best examples of remnant forest left on Waiheke. These days it is popular with walkers. Tracks go both around and across the reserve. Highlights include deep nikau palm groves and a stand of young, but nevertheless impressive, kauri. ====History====
The Royal Forest & Bird Society bought the reserve in 1962. In the 1960s and again in the 1980s locals put much effort into the clearing of gorse and other weeds.

In 1965 the society bought the cottage at 3 Scotts Tce, which it still lets out to members and non-members.

In 1989 Waiheke members formed the Hauraki Gulf Islands branch of the society (fomerly the Hauraki Islands Section), which now manages the reserve and has a ranger appointed for it.

The Museum is marked by signs that incorrectly state "Museum 500 metres". The signs are in fact 500 metres apart and the Museum is halfway between them. The number 1 bus (Onetangi) stops in front of the Museum.

The Museum consists of five main buildings: the Woolshed (which had to be reconstructed after a 1997 fire) and four cottages in the style of Waiheke baches of the 1930s-1950s. The main historical exhibits are in the Woolshed; the cottages contain period rooms, photo exhibits, archives and meeting rooms.

Membership meetings are usually held at 6:30 PM on the first Monday of the month. There is generally a speaker and/or a theme topic. Further information can be had at the Historical Society's website, http://www.waihekemuseum.org.nz.

Rocky Bay, also known as Omiha, is a relatively isolated community on the southern coast of Waiheke. The centre of the village contains what's left of the Rocky Bay Store, the Rocky Bay Hall run by the Omiha Welfare and Recreation Society, the War Memorial flagpole (and bus terminus), and the Rocky Bay Memorial Sailing Club located in Pohutukawa Road near the remains of the village's wharf.

Rocky Bay was the first place on Waiheke Island to be connected to the national electrical grid, in 1957. The previous year, it became the last community to be connected to the island's road network when O'Brien Road was completed. Prior to that, Rocky Bay was accessible only by boat, on horseback, or on foot.
The Great Waiheke Heritage Scavenger Hunt
The Waiheke Historical Society will sponsor a scavenger hunt on 29-30 September 2007 to mark Auckland Heritage Week. The Great Waiheke Heritage Scavenger Hunt will require contestants to respond to 30 questions and tasks about Waiheke. Knowledge about our natural, social, cultural, and historical heritage, as well as Googling skills, the Waiheke community library, Waihekepedia, and plain old on-the-street research will all come in handy to those who take up the challenge. Questions will vary in difficulty, and it is not expected that the winner will have answered them all. Several wild-card prizes will be given in addition to the grand prize donated by Cable Bay Vineyards.

The questionnaire will be released at 10:00 on Saturday morning, 29 September. It will be available at the Ostend market, the library, the Waiheke Historical Museum, and the Woolworths/Placemakers shopping centre, as well as online at http://www.waihekemuseum.org.nz. The completed questionnaire must be handed into the Museum by 4:00 on Sunday the 30th. A finish line party and sausage sizzle will begin at 3:00, with announcement of the winners expected by 4:30. Contestants must be present at the Museum to win.

The sausage sizzle will feature meat donated by the Village Butchery in Oneroa and buns provided by the European Bakery in Ostend, and therefore will be of a high quality. Prizes to be awarded at the sausage sizzle have all been donated by numerous island businesses.
The Waiheke Island Historical Society will sponsor a scavenger hunt on 29-30 September 2007 to mark Auckland Heritage Week.
