* <b>Mondays</b> 6:30 - 8pm: <b>Crash Course</b>: Chris Martenson’s “Crash Course” is a series of videos which serves as a clear and straightforward explanation of how our economy, energy systems and environment interact, how we got to where we are today, and some reasonable expectations for the future. The July sessions will be shown in the Theatre foyer on four successive Monday evenings from the 5th until the 26th of July from 6:30-8pm. A repeat of the series will run from the 9th to 30th of August. There is no charge for the course; we do ask, however, that people choose a month when they can attend all four sessions. * <b>Tuesdays</b> 3:30 - 8pm: <b>Dramability</b>: Cindy Peterken will be taking groups through drama classes that will include theatre games, improvisation, devising, script work, creating a character, stage fighting, mask work and more. Students must enrol for a term of lessons, and are encouraged to commit to a year's attendance to allow for more exciting planning. Each term will have a different focus and there will be at least one evening performance to put skills into practice. All students should arrive 5min before the start of the lesson and wear suitable loose clothing for moving around freely and there will be some floor work -- so no best clothes, please! Bring only a dollop of enthusiasm and a sense of humour. 6-8yo: 3:30 - 4:15; 9-13yo: 4:45 - 5:45; 14-18yo: 6:30-8:00. Artworks Community Theatre and Robert Mignault are proud to be running a youth workshop during the July school vacation aimed at developing performance skills and creative approaches for making new theatre. The workshop will run from Monday 12th to Friday 16th July, with a workshop performance on Saturday 17th July. It is open to youth and young adults aged 15 to 30 with a strong desire to participate and a willingness to engage in the creative process with others. The fee for the whole course will be $100. Chroma Lab will be an exploration of new ways of making theatre in our modern world. 2017 is the year of the 10th anniversary of Waihekepedia. The [[Main Page]] was created on July 24st 2007 and the first content article was
[[Matiatia]] on Ausugst 16th 2007. The [[500th_Page]] was created in 2008.

The Wiki was almost abandoned in 2014 when [[User:Wolfgang Fahl|Wolfgang]] tried a [[Waihekepedia_Revival|Revival]] which was more a technical move at the time.

I am willing to keep the site up and running and maintain it for a few more years at no cost. But I do not live on Waiheke so that
help is needed to keep the content at least not too outdated.

To avoid spammers currently there is no direct option for new users to open an account for themselves.
On the other hand new users would be a benefit for the Wiki. I am open for any proposal to get more active users/editors.

Montessori education was first brought to Waiheke in 1996 by Lee A Elliott and Kim Ngawhika. Waiheke Montessori Center first opened their doors to the public at the beginning of 1997. The centre provided education, based on Dr. Maria Montessori's method, up until 2007. Although the centre never received a licensed status, legally existing as a playgroup and homeschooling group, the 'grassroots' model proved popular with a large number of families. The Centre existed in a number of locations, once occupying Hekerua Lodge, and needed to continually had to adapt to the needs of the enrolled body. Without funding, the Centre relied heavily on parental contributions.

Using the same contributory software as the more famous [http://www.wikipedia.org wikipedia], [http://www.waihekegulfnews.co.nz/other-news/waihekepedia-puts-the-island-online.html Waihekepedia]was the brainchild of islanders Charles and Nikki Graves before being developed by a group of commuters who sit at the same (often noisy) table on the 7.20am ferry to Auckland.

Steve Keate uploaded and installed the MediaWiki software on to [http://www.openmynd.com Openmynd] server running Plesk. [[Bruce Davis-Goff]] fine tuned the MediaWiki software and Naomi Grinter created the logo. Editorial direction comes from Greg Treadwell. We see ourselves as being guardians of this project. We are also on the lookout for admins to help us police and maintain the neutrality of Waihekepedia.

We hope you enjoy this as much as we have creating it and watching it grow.

Island Navigator is a Car Ferry owned by Sealink and used on the Great Barrier Ferry Service. She is one of the largest vessels in the Sealink fleet and includes a cinema and reading room. The trip to Great Barrier takes 4.5 hours. She was previously owned by Sealink in Australia, but was sold to Subritzky Shipping. In 2004 Subritzky was sold to Sealink, bringing her back into the company.

The Tiri Cat is a ferry owned by 360 Discovery and used mostly on the Tiritiri Matangi ferry service. Tiri Cat is also regularly used on the commuter Devonport service, when the Kea is out of action. Tiri Cat was previously owned by Fullers and used on the Rangitoto and North Shore ferry services. She was replaced by the Wanderer in 2007.

Blackpool is a small settlement on the southern coast. The beach is popular with kayakers and for [[Windsurfing]].

Blackpool was originally called Brown Bay, after the Brown family that occupied the area.

Blackpool is also the home to a few community living houses. These houses share their resources and financial costs as well as encourage fun, creative thinking, and cultural exchange.

Blackpool is home to the [[Piritahi_Marae]] as well as the wreck of the scow [[Rahiri]]

A collection of Waiheke community groups is calling for The Esplanade between Blackpool and [[Surfdale]] to be made safe for walkers, horse riders and cyclists by closing it to vehicle traffic.

Community Board member [[Eileen Evans]], who is leading the call, says, “People are telling me they want to see a true esplanade - a place where everybody can walk or ride along the waterfront, safely and in peace. At the moment it’s a racetrack, a wasted opportunity that no family in their right mind would want to use”.

“The road would still be there, virtually unchanged. It would still be available in an emergency, simply by removing a few lockable bollards. We’ve spoken to the Waiheke Police and they have said that they would be happy with this arrangement”.

An online survey was set up to enable Waihekeans to have their say on the future of The Esplanade.

502 people took the survey before it closed on 10 March 2009.

When asked "Which option would you prefer for The Esplanade?", the 491 people who responded chose:

Is closed to vehicles except in emergencies 75.6% (371 respondents)

It is left as is (Vehicles both ways) 12.6% (62 respondents)

It is made one way to vehicles 11.8% (58 respondents)

Groups in favour of closing The Esplanade to vehicles include:

Waiheke Adult Riding Club,
Cycle Action Waiheke,
Waiheke Playgroup,
Walkways on Waiheke,
Waiheke Health Trust,
Waiheke Island Tourism,

Orapiu

Orapiu, located at the eastern end of Waiheke Island, was first subdivided in 1916.

It's the largest settlement at the eastern end, has a wharf and is the starting point for the Waiheke Island [[Wharf to Wharf Fun Run]]. The famous Blue Heron Lodge, adjacent to the wharf, was closed this year (2008) and current plans include subdivision of the property.

The Orapiu Wharf has been repaired (Oct/Nov 2007). It is one stop on the [http://www.360discovery.co.nz/pdf/360_Coromandel_Discovery.pdf ferry run] between Auckland and Coromandel.

The wharf is also a popular fishing spot.

Not far from the wharf, in the middle of the [[Waiheke Channel]], is [[Sunday Rock]], a marked navigation hazard.
