Little blue penguin (Eudyptula minor), known to Maori as korora, are a regular sight in the waters around Waiheke. They are the smallest of penguin, rarely measuring more than 40cm. By day they are at sea, camouflaged in steel blue feathers. At night they come ashore and can be heard sqawking noisily under the Matiatia wharf some evenings. Little blues tend to mate for life.
