Te Huruhi Block

Greg Treadwell

The Te Huruhi Block was a parcel of land important in Waiheke's history. It included all of the land west of a line drawn from Matenga Point to Hekerua Bay. The title for the block was issued in 1869 under five Maori names, under the mana of Ngati Hura, "in unequal, undivided shares" By 1870 it was the last land on Waiheke still in Maori ownership, having been assigned to the owners by chiefs in the 1950s. Ngati Hura, a hapu of Ngati Paoa, was descended from Hura who lived about 1750.
