Whilst cleary not a part of Waiheke, Mechanics Bay plays a vital part in the Waiheke Community being the home base of the [[Auckland Rescue Helicopter Trust]], [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Auckland_Marine_Rescue_Centre Marine Rescue Centre] , [http://www.auckland-coastguard.org.nz CoastGuard], [http://www.police.govt.nz/service/maritime/auckland.html Police Maritime Unit - Auckland Water Police] and [http://www.police.govt.nz/service/airsupport/ Police Air Support Unit - Eagle Police Helicopter]all of which provide a vital service to the Waiheke Community.

Historically, Mechanics Bay was also the home base of [[Sea Bee Air]] which flew passengers and freight via amphibious aircraft from Mechanics Bay to [[Surfdale]] and throughout the gulf.
