as a student 1986 to 1991 it was funny to read about a bitter introduction of the uniform, since we went through that in 1986 when the school came into existance. however you could get an exception if wearing uniform was against your parents ethical beliefs.. so about 1/3 didn't wear uniform, 2/3 did. plus after 5th form it wasn't required... interesting to hear what happened in the 2000s to compare.
