Originally from South Africa, Alex Stone moved to New Zealand and then Waiheke in the mid-1990s. A conceptual artist and poet, Alex lives in Palm Beach. He is also known for his performance poetry and acting.

He spent one term as chairman of the Waiheke High School board of trustees, during the tenure of principal Anne Willmann.

He is also the artist behind The Handsome Project, a long-term collaborative photographic project.

In 2006, Alex was involved as Communications Manager in groundbreaking work around reducing the stigma of mental illness, particularly with the publicity campaign aimed at sufferers of depression, and their friends and families, known as the National Depression Initiative. The publicity campaign was fronted in the media by John Kirwan and others who have suffered from the debilitating effects of depression.

Once a month he is also a guest on Waiheke Radio's Island Life show as one part of the "Opinionated Islanders".
