By the time our supplies of cheap and abundant oil become expensive and scarce will we have a made smooth transition to forms of society that allow us to meet our needs with grace and style?
There are a number of initiatives on this island already which acknowledge that Peak Oil, along with climate change, are issues that are likely to impact us in the near future, we are talking years, not decades. In a meeting held at the Palm Beach Hall on September 25th, 2007, people watched some video clips of Rob Hopkins speaking about Transition Towns. It seemed to the circle gathered there, that an inventory of these initiatives would be a useful thing to record.

Waiheke Why Wait: An event was held in Morra hall on March 15th to explore the possible issues of the triple crunch of Peak Oil, Climate Change and Economic Collapse on the well being of the Waiheke community. Many areas were explored, and after a dotmocracy voting process we agreed to focus on three priority areas: Waste, Transport and Food.
Waiheke Does It Better: The Campaign to keep Waiheke's Waste Resources in local hands was lost to the decision makers in Auckland City Council in July 2009. The people of Waiheke Island, however, still hold true their intention to do things better: to reduce, reuse and recycle their waste, to support local community efforts and realise that together, people are greater than they are just by themselves. Waiheke Community Planning : Update February 2010. Our Waiheke Island Community Planning Group Inc through the work of its members and associates has for over five years now been working with Councils, and with community groups and environmental groups and government agencies, and with other interested individuals, to improve the planning framework and instruments as they apply to Waiheke Island and the Hauraki Gulf – Tikapa Moana.
Thus the purpose and objectives behind setting up this web site and document archive are to provide open access to the body of work carried out by the Group which can be seen as both a transparency objective, and to facilitate information sharing, and most importantly to promote more informed discourse as we prepare to enter our new Auckland Local Governance paradigm with its increased roles for Local Boards in a new low carbon limited world, and its needed shared ambitions and planning focus upon People, Places and Futures. A page was created for Ilya Volykhine last month, possibly by the artist himself or by a relative. The page makes no claim to any association between Volykhine and Waiheke, and the author hasn't responded to a query on their talk page. Does anyone know if this is a legit article on someone with Waiheke connections? There is now a claim "He currently has a studio located on Waiheke Island that is open to the public by appointment during the summer season." which satisfies the residency need as far as I am concerned.
