Good points. I like both categories and red links. Cheers. Hackademic.

Couldn't agree more, Countrymike, about the anonymity. But not sure what you mean. Sign Hackademic 15:33, 31 August 2007 (NZST) to what, my edits? or my talk messages? The username comes up in recent changes. Thanks for bringing your expertise. Welcome to the project. The one who didn't sign the discussion page on the licensing was Bruced, who does the software tweaking. Hackademic.

OK got it now. Will add details on my page. Duh. . . Hackademic 15:34, 31 August 2007 (NZST)

I believe we do have Waihekepedia.co.nz, which points browsers to us, but I agree, org would be better. Will ask my techie friends. Hackademic 16:55, 31 August 2007 (NZST)

Brent, give me a call on 974-2303 when you get back, so we can go to Lazy Lounge Charles Tihare 11:10, September 6, 2007 (NZST)

Re category Vineyards /wineries, technically there are vineyards that are not or no longer wineries, A Winery doesnt necessarily have a vinyard and vice versa. A subtle point Tihare 14:12, September 9, 2007 (NZST)

Okay Brent, I have filled the categories we have, need guidance on some, suggestions,

Hi Brent - I have copied in some of Chris's stuff so I could link to the priceless audio but have lost the links to properly attribute the stuff - are you able to help me atribute it correctly? thanks in advance (sez da newbie) Bruced

Thanks for that CMike - that's just what I wanted to do after putting a bunch of pages into a new category so people didn't have to check each one. hackademic

Thanks for updating the news CM Tihare 14:58, September 15, 2007 (NZST)

I had a go at adding the parserfunctions, http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/ParserFunctions The plesk box is running ver 4.3.2. When I added the require_once line it screwed up font size. Will discuss it with Bruce Tihare 21:08, September 15, 2007 (NZST)

CM, the Businesslab page, he also put it up as BusinessLAB, then moved the page to commercial, then back to BusinessLAB. That meant anyone doing a search on commercial went straight to businesslab page, Not very sporting inmy books Tihare 09:05, September 16, 2007 (NZST)

I am afraid you are correct, it is however a limitation we will have to live with as the plesk box it is running on does not have php 5, which is required for later versions of mediawike, i think it will be a case of waiting until the new plesk box goes up, build new mediawiki and migrate data, your thoughts?

CM, I see you have done red links for Rocky Bay, Is the rocky bay hall the same as the omiha memorial hall for which there is a page? Tihare 20:59, September 29, 2007 (NZST)

Promotions[edit]

I would have thought a bit of discussion before promoting to sysop wuld be appropriate Tihare 22:06, October 9, 2007 (NZDT)

See my note on the COmmunity POrtal talk. I've known Gadfium as a dedicated editor and maintaner of Wikipedia for a long time (see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Gadfium) and his early contributions here in editing and on noting spam have already been constant. If you think this too hasty then revoke and bring up for discussion. Countrymike 22:12, 9 October 2007 (NZDT)

Thanks. A wiki like this with such informal procedures is a joy to work on. I have no problem waiting for a while for people to discuss the matter, but I will delete spam pages and block obvious spammers in the meantime unless someone tells me not to.-Gadfium 22:09, 9 October 2007 (NZDT)

Wikipedia admin protocol states

Administrators, commonly known as admins and also called sysops (system operators), are Wikipedia editors who have access to technical features that help with maintenance. Wikipedia practice is to grant administrator status to anyone who has been an active and regular Wikipedia contributor for at least a few months, is familiar with and respects Wikipedia policy, and who has gained the trust of the community.

No different here IMHO

CEG 23:01, 9 October 2007 (NZDT)

In that case i'm really confused.... because this is the first time i've ever encountered the User:Operator ... yet, i'm supposed to "trust" him over an editor who has been participating, and has a track record in a far earlier, and more substantial wiki community than this? Countrymike 23:43, 9 October 2007 (NZDT)

The user Operator initiated and paid for this site. The user Operator is the first user created.

Well, why all the secrecy then? User:Tihare I presume? It hardly seems as if removing me from group sysop under the guise of a non-active user (Operator) was very fair and then locking the main page down... i thought that we'd already had that discussion and openness worked out quite well in that situation. If you don't value my participation then i'll quite easily go elsewhere ... i've got a few other wikis that could use my attention. Countrymike 00:23, 10 October 2007 (NZDT)'

Your constant whinging is becoming tiring, as has been your ignoring of posts. The status is this. I am a guardian of this project, because I thought of it and am paying for it. It is on this version of mediawiki until I can get a new webserver that I can deploy the latest version of plesk, that will have the later version of PHP, that will support the later version of mediawiki. Not before. As the person that created this all I ask is that you respect that and those that made this possible. You may have had heaps of experience with other Wiki projects, and I repect that. When I am satisfied that a group has emerged that can and will manage this long term I will re assign the domain, until then, enjoy it for what it is. I will re instate your ops status, as with Gadfium now I have had time to check out who he is. Think of this as a new exerience for us that we are very proud of. We need to be encouraged into the realm of wiki, not railroaded. Can you accept that? Tihare 18:24, October 10, 2007 (NZDT)

Constant whinging and ignoring of posts?!...whatever. Don't know really what you're talking about; i've replied to everything I can think of so far in multiple places. I don't understand how any of what has transpired here has to do with a new version of mediawiki, or reassigning any domains ... i was just peeved at having the big stick taken out so quickly, which isn't really the way wikis or community work in my book; this platform is about communicating and using the tools available to the average user not sovereignty. It hardly seems as if I'm the one railroading anybody - i thought i was helping stop spam. Countrymike 19:33, 10 October 2007 (NZDT)

You have your view, and that is fine, I accept that. Apparently you cannot accept my view and feelings which I find unfortunate. That I am hoping is the last word on this topic.

I accept that I might have acted a bit hastily on promoting Gafium ... my apologies for that. I still don't agree with the way that it was handled by desysopping both of us immediately. But, like you said, lets move onto more important matters. Countrymike

Now to more important matters. I cannot seem to edit the dns on this domain, I will try again after 8 pm, this may break it again because it takes several hours to propegate. I cannot move off this box untili get the dns fixed. if it breaks by 11 I will set it back.

Have you migrated mediawiki to a new box? How would you do it, load the same version, import, then do an in place upgrade? Tihare 20:24, October 10, 2007 (NZDT)

I haven't done an upgrade, no.. but your plan sounds about how I would attack it if I had to. There's a bit here: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Upgrading Countrymike 12:29, 11 October 2007 (NZDT)

Hi CMike. Yes it's still an ad because I thought I would give them a couple of days to rewrite it, rather than jump in boots and all and maybe put people off. I have told them there's an issue on the page's disucssion page. Maybe if they don't do something I'll put it on their talk page. But you're right, a category that would group all pages in need of that sort of work - say, neutralising - would be great. Then I (and others of course) can specifically go there for that purpose. Good idea. What about In Need of Neutralising ? hackademic 16:30, 15 October 2007 (NZDT)
