Hi, this is my talk page

Isn't it good!!

I came up with the idea of a Waiheke Island website as I was disappointed by the self-serving drivel of the majority of websites that purport to represent Waiheke Island.

Most of these web sites have a commercial bias and do not reflect the unique nature of New Zealand's third most populated island.

I wanted a web page that was like a diorama of Waiheke.

With the help of a team of dedicated and talented people the idea has developed and blossomed into Waihekepedia. It is based on MediaWiki as used by Wikipedia

Tihare (Waihekepedia Admin)

Hey Tihare

I think I sent you a couple of messages that were actually to myself. But getting a hang of it now. Hope Emmy's ok with me. check out the disc page. Also sent her a message but not sure did, actually. Saw your Omiha page but the pic didn;t appear. Actually, I set up a Rocky Bay page, if you prefer. hack

Hiya tihare. interview on the beach went well - big ups and interest from Chris. told his audience his fingers were itching to get on. said he was going to - wait for this - upload a lof of archival stuff he has stored on some e-library on some US server. Includes an intervieww he did with Maynie Thompson on the 20th anniversary of the no-nukes legislation. V cool. He also recorded the interview today so he could upload it to the Waihekepedia page. Great stuff. Hope no-one got eaten by the anaconda. Hackademic 18:23, 8 September 2007 (NZST)

Hiya - didn't you put something up about the houseboats, or am I dreaming/deluded. Hackademic 12:02, 5 September 2007 (NZST)

Hey T Lots of people coming and going from the chat room (7.40pm Fri) but no-one contributing. I suspect it might be you with multiple log-ins winding me up. Hack

Hey T In the chat room I think people who aren't logged in can come and look . . . but not contribute. That's probably why there are so many silent numbers? Hack

Apparently not so Tihare 10:11, September 1, 2007 (NZST)

Lol. Are you watching everthing I do? I'm supposed to be at work but when I got there realised I didn't have the right keys! So came home to NOT get straight onto WP . . . and did. I have fixed PC. It was the wrong type of video card, sorry. Not PIC, although I told you it was. But Thomas gave me right sort and seems to work.

on chat page now

I added something to Te Whau page and it went weird. Can you fix? H

Shall we say... 10:30am? @ the LL? There's a pic of me here: http://www.wikieducator.org/User:BrentSimpson that may help identify me ... maybe. Countrymike 20:46, 8 September 2007 (NZST)

Wow, that weather thingy's cool. Hackademic 17:45, 12 September 2007 (NZST)

Yes I can see - wicked

Ae. Didn;t read the whole thing but looked good . . . now we have to make it work! I have full confidence . . . quite a moment in history, really.

couldn't get www.webmail.waihekepedia.com to open Hackademic

WRT hack done - more to come though. hackademic

HELP - all the fonts on all the pages have blown out to be big and ugly. What's up? Have I done something? Or is it the same for you? hackademic Don't worry - sorted. Another senior moment - just my browser playing up. hackademic

Charles: I wonder whether the version of parser functions that you tried to install were compatible with the version of MediaWiki that is running. The MediaWiki here is kind of old ... 1.5.4 I think, and the most recent version is 1.9. Might need to check that the parser functions are compatible with this version. Countrymike 13:51, 16 September 2007 (NZST)

Hey Tihare - it's on 199!!!!!!!!! I made a page about Koi Island to push it over but it didn't register. By the time you read this it will probably be 200+! I think we deserve a drink. At home today - taken a couple of days off. So of course I got a cold.

Hey Ti. Have put up a page on Mad Dog. Do your bit. hackademic 19:12, 27 September 2007 (NZST)

Hi Tihare - can you upload that pic to Quickcat II. Have made page. hackademic 17:09, 30 September 2007 (NZST)hackademic 21:02, 9 October 2007 (NZDT)

Hello. Do you know why the main page is locked? hackademic 21:02, 9 October 2007 (NZDT)

Has the webmail address changed? Doesn't seem to work. hackademic 17:05, 11 October 2007 (NZDT)

Remind me how to check the email? hackademic 10:08, 12 March 2008 (NZDT)

What was the URL for the email? www.webmail.waihekepedia.com ? Won't work.hackademic 23:18, 7 May 2008 (NZST)

Images busted[edit]

Charles.. image uploads seem to be busted. Just tried one on my sandbox and got this: Internal error From Waihekepedia Could not rename file "/tmp/phpeodugg" to "public/4/42/Me.jpg". Could be a permissions problem on the public directory. Last image upload in the logs is 19 March so perhaps something to do with the server meltdown or the clean URLS? T-shirts[edit]

I had a friend look for a T-shirt at the Saturday Ostend market for me a couple of weeks ago, and she couldn't find any. Are they still available, and if so where?-Gadfium 20:29, 1 June 2009 (NZST)

Hello[edit]

Thought it might be you. Have you got a Bhatnager in your bonnet? Nice page. Nice link to the Herald! What would his Mum say, I wonder?

Spamfilter[edit]

Now that we're running a fairly recent version of mediaWiki, can you install http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:SpamBlacklist so we can set up a blacklist to prevent people adding spam links here. Just a block on any domain ending in .ru would probably be effective, but I suggest we start by copying the blacklist at http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Spam_blacklist. I'd be happy to maintain the list once the extension is installed.-Gadfium 09:52, 1 July 2009 (NZST)

I don't know the configuration you are using, but assuming you are running on a Linux machine with a Debian-based distro (such as Ubuntu), the extensions directory is probably at /var/lib/mediawiki/extensions, and your LocalSettings.php shold be at ll /etc/mediawiki/LocalSettings.php (copied from /var/lib/mediawiki/LocalSettings.php so it doesn't get overwritten by upgrades). The variable $IP will already be defined in LocalSettings.php.
Once you have the three files in the SpamBlacklist subdirectory of extensions, add the following lines to LocalSettings.php:
require_once( "$IP/extensions/SpamBlacklist/SpamBlacklist.php" );
$wgSpamBlacklistFiles = array(
   "http://meta.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Spam_blacklist&action=raw&sb_ver=1", // Wikimedia's list
);

This will use Wikimedia's list, and no local list. If we find this isn't sufficient, we can create a local list too. Any local list will need to be fully protected so only administrators can edit it.-Gadfium 09:06, 2 July 2009 (NZST)

Thanks. I created a non-admin account to test, and pasted a small amount of spam text into it, but no sign of the blacklist working. However, we'll see if the real spammers continue, and if they do I'll see what is necessary to get a local blacklist in place.-Gadfium 20:07, 2 July 2009 (NZST)

I tried again with a domain picked at random from the wikimedia blacklist, and got a message saying "The page you wanted to save was blocked by the spam filter. This is probably caused by a link to an external site." when I tried to save. The filter is definitely working. It may be that our particular spammers' sites are not on the blacklist. You'll probably find a log somewhere calling my test account nasty names.-Gadfium 20:13, 2 July 2009 (NZST)

Spammers are back, so we're going to have to create a local list. Please change the LocalSettings.php file to read

require_once( "$IP/extensions/SpamBlacklist/SpamBlacklist.php" );
$wgSpamBlacklistFiles = array(
   "http://meta.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Spam_blacklist&action=raw&sb_ver=1", // Wikimedia's list
   //  database      title
   "DB: wikidb Waihekepedia:Spam_blacklist",
);

I have already created the page Waihekepedia:Spam_blacklist with the contents

\.ru  # Russian spammers

I've protected it for admin editing only. Incorrect lines in this page could make editing any page with external links difficult.

I've tested this on my own mediawiki installation at home. It works. You can test it from an admin account; just try to create a page containing http://anything.ru. A page which already contains such a domain can still be edited, the filter only works on newly added links.

Please let me know when this is in place and I'll test it myself as well.-Gadfium 08:48, 7 July 2009 (NZST)

Yes, seems to work. As far as upgrading mediawiki goes, I suggest just following the instructions at [1]. It should be fairly foolproof, so long as you remember to run the update script. My home wiki is using 1.13.3, because that's the version kubuntu gave me when I updated to the latest distro. That's near enough to identical with this version that I can use mine to experiment with changes for Waihekepedia without disrupting the live site. If you want, I'll upgrade it sometime in the next few days and let you know of any problems I encounter.
I don't know much about Twitter, so probably can't help you there. There are a number of mediawiki extensions to deal with twitter: do any of these do what you want? Twitter4wiki fetches all the tweeds from your friends, and provides them in an mediawiki-project - rather like RSS, as I understand it. Twitter allows you to add an individual twitter feed to a wiki page. Twitter Widget displays your twitter status and last few messages on a wiki page. I'm not sure how the last two widgets differ from each other. SendToTwitter posts a tweet to twitter of any url that is updated in the wiki.-Gadfium 10:48, 7 July 2009 (NZST)
I'm not expecting to come over anytime soon. I'll let you know when I've upgraded my version of mediawiki and what problems I've encountered. I'm not a mediawiki expert; you've got more experience configuring it than I do.-Gadfium 22:07, 9 July 2009 (NZST)
