Spiritual Cinema

Waiheke Spiritual Cinema Circle is a group of people who get together every month for an offering of films from all over the world that explore the questions of who we are, why we're here and where we're going with a focus on inspiring, enthusing and entertaining you — and fundraising for Island causes at the same time.

Spiritual Cinema evenings are held on the last Wednesday of each month at Waiheke Community Cinema, starting at 7:30pm, and are sponsored by Waiheke Wellness, Auckland City and the Cinema.

Entry is by donation ($10 suggested) or by koha, and proceeds go to a different community group every month.

Screenings are restricted to Cinema Circle members; you can join at the door (annual sub of $2).

April's films:

• Love on Track: This sweet short is about a topic that most of us are faced with every day: do we choose to connect with strangers or avoid the potential connection that exists between two people? In this film two people sit near each other on a train, trying to navigate the possibility between them while taking a crash course in non-verbal communication. [5m]

• We Were One: This is our fourth Scott Cervine film, created in just seven days during the Elevate Film Festival! Welcome into the mind of a man who is a bit overwhelmed... by a printer? Well you would be too, if you needed to say what he needs to say. Blending humour with serious spiritual catharsis, Mr. Cervine again brings us that sublime moment where we remember that we truly were (and are) all one. [10m]

• Humanity Ascending: Barbara Marx Hubbard is one of the most renowned minds on the planet today exploring human evolution in a spiritual light. In this brilliant short documentary, she brings us hope in a time of immense change, offering an alternative voice while the media is constantly delivering stories of doom and destruction. What if humans are capable of consciously evolving into a new world? Could we become a people who live peacefully and gently on the planet, fulfilling a prophecy of love, equality and abundance for all? It’s about time that we heard a voice of possibility describing our future! [40m]

• Bab'Aziz: This beautifully poetic film is a fable unfolding through time and space. Bab’Aziz is a blind Sufi dervish who embarks with his granddaughter, Ishtar, on a journey to find the mysterious gathering of the dervishes that happens only once every 30 years. As they wander the desert guided by their faith and intuition, Bab’Aziz entertains Ishtar with a fairy tale about a prince who gives up his kingdom to contemplate his soul. As they meet other travelers and hear their tales, we discover with Ishtar the essence of yearning and belonging, exploring the deeper planes of the soul. [96m]

This month’s Spiritual Cinema proceeds will go to Japheth's Art Funds. Japheth is an autistic boy who is finding focus in art.
