In June 2004 a seven-month-old baby islander, Charlotte Cleverley-Bisman, was struck down by meningococcal septicaemia. Her remarkable survival and the amputation of all four of her limbs made her extraordinary recovery a story that went worldwide.
A quote from her father, Perry Bisman:
- "Anecdotal evidence suggests there are no other cases worldwide where such a tiny baby has survived such a full-blown infection and the subsequent quadruple amputations Charlotte has endured."
