Hi, this is my talk page
Isn't it good!!
I came up with the idea of a Waiheke Island website as I was disappointed by the self-serving drivel of the majority of websites that purport to represent Waiheke Island.
Most of these web sites have a commercial bias and do not reflect the unique nature of New Zealand's third most populated island.
I wanted a web page that was like a diorama of Waiheke.
With the help of a team of dedicated and talented people the idea has developed and blossomed into Waihekepedia. It is based on MediaWiki as used by Wikipedia
Tihare (Waihekepedia Admin)
Hey Tihare
I think I sent you a couple of messages that were actually to myself. But getting a hang of it now. Hope Emmy's ok with me. check out the disc page. Also sent her a message but not sure did, actually. Saw your Omiha page but the pic didn;t appear. Actually, I set up a Rocky Bay page, if you prefer. hack

Hey T In the chat room I think people who aren't logged in can come and look . . . but not contribute. That's probably why there are so many silent numbers? Hack

Hello
Thought it might be you. Have you got a Bhatnager in your bonnet? Nice page. Nice link to the Herald! What would his Mum say, I wonder?
Spamfilter
Now that we're running a fairly recent version of mediaWiki, can you install http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:SpamBlacklist so we can set up a blacklist to prevent people adding spam links here. Just a block on any domain ending in .ru would probably be effective, but I suggest we start by copying the blacklist at http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Spam_blacklist. I'd be happy to maintain the list once the extension is installed.-Gadfium 09:52, 1 July 2009 (NZST)
- I don't know the configuration you are using, but assuming you are running on a Linux machine with a Debian-based distro (such as Ubuntu), the extensions directory is probably at /var/lib/mediawiki/extensions, and your LocalSettings.php shold be at ll /etc/mediawiki/LocalSettings.php (copied from /var/lib/mediawiki/LocalSettings.php so it doesn't get overwritten by upgrades). The variable $IP will already be defined in LocalSettings.php.
- Once you have the three files in the SpamBlacklist subdirectory of extensions, add the following lines to LocalSettings.php:
require_once( "$IP/extensions/SpamBlacklist/SpamBlacklist.php" ); $wgSpamBlacklistFiles = array( "http://meta.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Spam_blacklist&action=raw&sb_ver=1", // Wikimedia's list );
This will use Wikimedia's list, and no local list. If we find this isn't sufficient, we can create a local list too. Any local list will need to be fully protected so only administrators can edit it.-Gadfium 09:06, 2 July 2009 (NZST)
Thanks. I created a non-admin account to test, and pasted a small amount of spam text into it, but no sign of the blacklist working. However, we'll see if the real spammers continue, and if they do I'll see what is necessary to get a local blacklist in place.-Gadfium 20:07, 2 July 2009 (NZST)
I tried again with a domain picked at random from the wikimedia blacklist, and got a message saying "The page you wanted to save was blocked by the spam filter. This is probably caused by a link to an external site." when I tried to save. The filter is definitely working. It may be that our particular spammers' sites are not on the blacklist. You'll probably find a log somewhere calling my test account nasty names.-Gadfium 20:13, 2 July 2009 (NZST)
Spammers are back, so we're going to have to create a local list. Please change the LocalSettings.php file to read
require_once( "$IP/extensions/SpamBlacklist/SpamBlacklist.php" ); $wgSpamBlacklistFiles = array( "http://meta.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Spam_blacklist&action=raw&sb_ver=1", // Wikimedia's list // database title "DB: wikidb Waihekepedia:Spam_blacklist", );
I have already created the page Waihekepedia:Spam_blacklist with the contents
\.ru # Russian spammers
I've protected it for admin editing only. Incorrect lines in this page could make editing any page with external links difficult.
I've tested this on my own mediawiki installation at home. It works. You can test it from an admin account; just try to create a page containing http://anything.ru. A page which already contains such a domain can still be edited, the filter only works on newly added links.
Please let me know when this is in place and I'll test it myself as well.-Gadfium 08:48, 7 July 2009 (NZST)
- Yes, seems to work. As far as upgrading mediawiki goes, I suggest just following the instructions at [1]. It should be fairly foolproof, so long as you remember to run the update script. My home wiki is using 1.13.3, because that's the version kubuntu gave me when I updated to the latest distro. That's near enough to identical with this version that I can use mine to experiment with changes for Waihekepedia without disrupting the live site. If you want, I'll upgrade it sometime in the next few days and let you know of any problems I encounter.
- I don't know much about Twitter, so probably can't help you there. There are a number of mediawiki extensions to deal with twitter: do any of these do what you want? Twitter4wiki fetches all the tweeds from your friends, and provides them in an mediawiki-project - rather like RSS, as I understand it. Twitter allows you to add an individual twitter feed to a wiki page. Twitter Widget displays your twitter status and last few messages on a wiki page. I'm not sure how the last two widgets differ from each other. SendToTwitter posts a tweet to twitter of any url that is updated in the wiki.-Gadfium 10:48, 7 July 2009 (NZST)
- I'm not expecting to come over anytime soon. I'll let you know when I've upgraded my version of mediawiki and what problems I've encountered. I'm not a mediawiki expert; you've got more experience configuring it than I do.-Gadfium 22:07, 9 July 2009 (NZST)
