Flowering nikau

The nikau palm, Palmae rhopalostylis, is New Zealand's only native palm. It grows up to 15m and is a forest dweller. In spring it sprouts large clusters of mauve flowers developing into red berries which are a favourite of the kereru.

A nikau protrudes from the canopy of the Onetangi Forest and Bird Reserve
