An annual event featuring a run from Orapiu Wharf to Matiatia Wharf, the Wharf to Wharf is known among runners as New Zealand's toughest fun run. New Zealand ultra-distance champion and Waiheke resident Mark Bright is famed for having won it several times. In 2006, however, it was easily won by marathon runner and island journalist Scott Winton. The race is actually made of three races, with runners and walkers having 7km, 12km and 25km options. The race began in 1992 and in 2006 drew 580 entrants.
