For many years, the Rocky Bay Store was the commercial heart of the isolated Omiha community. It was also a popular supplies stop for boaties cruising the Hauraki Gulf.
It is understood to have been built in 1918.
In the early 2000s a proposal by the then owner to demolish the historic store and build townhouses brought solid opposition from local residents, who were successful in their application for heritage status for the store.
Some time after the dispute an arsonist all but destroyed it. The remnants, seen here, are still under that protection order.
