Te Huruhi School is Waiheke Island's original primary school located at 7 Donald Bruce Road in Surfdale. It opened in 1986. Children originally attended Waiheke Area School which is now Waiheke High School. It is a state school governed by the Ministry of Education and a school Board of Trustees. Te Huruhi follows the official New Zealand curriculum with classroom programmes designed to assist local children.

The school welcomes children in Years 1-6 and has no zone, so children from any part of Waiheke are eligible to attend. The school is an integral part of Waiheke’s close-knit community and hosts many events in the school hall and offers its swimming pool to the public over the summer holidays.

It has a roll of 423, and a decile of 5.

The Te Huruhi Way

Te Huruhi School's philosophy is based on Quality Schooling and the work of William Glasser. This philosophy supports an understanding of how to learn and behave. It also explains why behaviour problems exist and how we can begin to resolve those issues.

A Quality School:

  • Is one where people are courteous and considerate
  • Is one where people talk with, not at each other
  • Is one where children are taught to do quality work
  • Has reasonable rules which everyone agrees on because they are beneficial to the individual and the group
  • Teaches self-responsibility and self-evaluation
  • Is an inclusive environment where each child has opportunity to develop to their potential

‘The Te Huruhi Way’ describes how a learning community chooses to implement and teach this philosophy. ‘The Te Huruhi Way’ is underpinned by five core values.

The Five Cs are:

Caring, Co-operation, Courtesy, Courage and Commitment.

These shared values are introduced at the beginning of the school year and are promoted, taught and reviewed during the year. They are also the basis of ethical professional relationships within our school and with the wider community. Woven through each of these five values is an understanding of the consequences of individual choice.

Te Huruhi School is a CARING place, so feel safe.

Have COURAGE to learn new things, and do what you know is right.

Be COMMITTED to doing your best.

Be COURTEOUS. CO-OPERATE with others.

Make good CHOICES and enjoy your achievements.

Nga Purapura Akoranga

Te Huruhi School offers an extensive Maori cultural programme for any child or family who request and are accepted to be part of one of bi-lingual classes in Nga Purapura Akoranga. These classes cater for students from Yr 2 (6 years) through to Yr 6 (11 years).

The programme follows the mainstream curriculum requirements with the added dimension of Maori language, music and culture, te reo me ona tikanga. It is necessary to enrol your child on the waiting list held at the office to be eligible for admission to Nga Purapura Akoranga.
