Ngati Paoa are the recognised iwi of Waiheke Island. Other tribes have lived on the island, including Ngati Maru, but Ngati Paoa, once almost entirely gone from the island, are now recognised as tangata whenua.

Their history is summarised here in the Waitangi Tribunal's findings on the Waiheke Claim, which surrounded ownership of the Waiheke Station.
