Upcoming Events on Waiheke Island:

April

  • Right Now! Waiheke Does It Better: Campaign to keep our waste resource managed on the island. "The tender for the management of our transfer station is currently open to bidders... and there is a real danger that the Auckland City Council - and in particular the City Development Committee - will vote for an Australian-owned company to manage our waste. If this happens, jobs will be lost and all our recycling will be transported - unsorted - off the island and added to the huge rubbish mountain accumulating in Auckland." If you want don't want this to happen, make your voice heard. Remember, all that’s needed for evil to triumph is for good people to do nothing. Do something today: grab the postcards or simply go to www.WaihekeDoesItBetter.org.nz and send emails instead.
  • Mondays 7:00-8:00pm from 20Apr: Feldenkrais classes with Judy Oliver. Feldenkrais is an educational system centered on movement, aiming to expand and refine the use of the self through awareness. It is intended for those who wish to improve their movement repertoire (dancers, musicians, artists), as well as those wishing to reduce pain or limitations in movement, and many who want to improve their general well-being and personal development. Because it uses movement as the primary vehicle for gaining awareness, it is directly applicable to disorders that arise from restricted or habitually poor movement. Contact Judy on 372-9780 or JudysMove@xtra.co.nz. @ Artworks Community Theatre
  • Thursdays 7:30-9pm: Afro/Latin/Brazilian Dancing: Contact Tania for more information: 027-654-3651. Entry by koha. @ Artworks Community Theatre
  • Su12Apr 2pm: The Orderly by the Rebel Alliance: "Hospitals are Battlefields": Enter the fringe world of medieval re-enactment and meet meek and mild-mannered Peter -- orderly during the week, ferocious warrior in the weekend. As he prepares for the weekend's big battle against the notorious Vikings, a friend in need changes his life. Time flickers, empty hospital wards turn into long-forgotten battlefields, and everybody fights for their lives. Inspired by the real life of an Auckland hospital orderly who died in 2003, The Orderly takes you into the very heart of one of life's foot soldiers. The play is written and performed by Michael Downey, who takes on all parts; ranging from the gorgeous nurse, Donna, to a semi nude Viking berserker high on mushrooms and lusting for blood. See www.therebelalliance.co.nz/the-orderly. Doors and café open at 1:30. Tickets will be $20 / $15 / $10 prepaid and door sales will be $25 / $20 / $10. Bookings to the Theatre on 372-2941msg or ArtworksTheatre@gmail.com. @ Artworks Community Theatre

  • Fr08May 7pm and Sa09May 2pm: Letteracy: "It was called "Flora’s Hairy Chest" – a goat-skin trunk that contained all of our family secrets; a litter of letters, left like worded crumbs to mark the path home." Meet Emily Post, the Queen of letter writing, etiquette, pole dance with a letter box, see the Tsar's slot and play the game you've got mail… A lively interactive piece of storytelling theatre, stamped, sealed and delivered by story-o-phile and frock-o-holic Tanya Batt. "… It’s an hour-long, one-woman, laugh-out-loud, non-embarrassing audience-interaction show. We left feeling decidedly excellent. Yes, there is interaction. No, you are unlikely to feel embarrassed if you are chosen!" @ Artworks Community Theatre
  • Sa09May 8pm: Sika Encore: Sika sold out last year's "Lightning Man" concert, so make sure you get in early this time! Experience the power of the ancient didjeridoo, Native American flute, drums, voice and percussion with internationally acclaimed performer and recording artist Sika. This very unusual concert has stirred up quite a following here in NZ, as well as in the UK, USA and Australia. See www.caitlinsika.com for more details. @ Artworks Community Theatre
