Weaving together food, death and comedy, ''Murder by Chocolate'' is a tribute to not only the original murder mystery, but to art, the cult of celebrity and, of course, chocolate. Alex Ellis plays Felicia Fargo, a disenchanted romance writer who is determined to reject the fluff of romance for the gritty world of crime writing. Inevitably Felicia finds herself embroiled in a bizarre series of chocolaty murders based on her own dubious crime novel. Alongside Dorian, her clueless assistant (played by Phil Ormsby) she attempts to untangle the traditional web of lies and plot twists to discover the truth behind the murders and her own bittersweet history. In classic whodunit style, the body count rises as the chocolate finger of suspicion points to… who? The TV psychic? The crime-writing policeman? Or Felicia’s own mother, the greatest celebrity chef to come out of a Balclutha bakery? It’s a chocolate rush to die for! Dark, rich, and full of nuts! Artworks Theatre is not simply a performing arts theatre; it is a community-owned, volunteer-run, multi-purpose venue which is able to be claimed as "home" for a variety of Waiheke groups. The Snug is a relaxed and intimate venue with couches and comfortable seating for up to 20 people, and is ideal for poetry recitals, book clubs, study groups, club meetings, etc. The Auditorium (includes the stage) may be hired separately for larger group activities and performing arts, or may be hired along with the Snug for exclusive use.
The Theatre has a licensed Café and EFTPOS facilities available for special events.
We are bringing new energy and enthusiasm to the Theatre by creating a completely new administrative structure — where many hands will make light work — to ensure the brightest of futures for this wonderful community asset. The Incorporated Society has now been established and is accepting members. If you're into performing, children's theatre, lighting, direction/production, set design or construction, sound, front of house, administration, makeup and wardrobe, backstage, special effects, or providing that essential component of performing arts — the audience! — get in touch and we'll send you a membership form.
