31 September: Several ferries were cancelled between Waikeke and Auckland from 10 am in anticipation of a tsunami following an earthquake in Samoa. At one point passengers waiting at the Matiatia terminal were asked to leave the terminal and seek higher ground. No tsunami reached New Zealand, and normal service resumed at 2 pm.

  • Tu17Nov, 8:00pm: Martin Pearson LIVE! Martin has been described as the world’s funniest male, long-haired, Victorian, piscean folk singer. Formerly of the act “Martin Pearson”, Martin has risen to fame like a dead pigeon in a water tank. He plays the fool in B sharp and is one of the Australian folk scene’s favourite personalities. A performance can include any of: traditional folk standards and ballads (Martin with his beautiful voice and acoustic guitar); pop and rock classics; swing standards; brilliant, topical parodies on any of these; stand up comedy; or a complete one-man retelling of “The Lord of the Rings” performed as a musical - including an analysis of the differences between the book and film versions. Tickets $20 ($15 concession) through the Theatre: 372-2941 or ArtworksTheatre@gmail.com. Doors and café open at 7:15. @ Artworks Community Theatre
  • Fr20Nov 7pm: Celebration@Artworks: As some people may have already seen, our Community Theatre at Artworks has some rather nice new chairs. Gone are those old, green plastic BBQ chairs — replaced by 120 brand-new padded seats covered in a very fetching dark red fabric. The arrival of the seats marks the end of an 18-month project to upgrade its facilities by the group of volunteers that now runs the theatre. During that period the group has raised over $40,000 to improve the acoustics, purchase a new PA system, install an internal communications system, buy several new stage lights, replace the lighting control system and — finally — to give the audience something softer to sit upon! To celebrate the end of 18 months of hard work, there will be another Evening@Artworks, where a wide variety of entertainers bring their talents and expertise in to entertain all comers. Admission is free to all, and you're invited to bring a plate to share for supper. The doors and café will open at 6:30, with entertainment starting at 7:00. If you'd like to perform a song, dance, reading, mime, skit or whatever, please contact the Theatre on 372-2941 or ArtworksTheatre@gmail.com. @ Artworks Community Theatre
