Artworks Community Theatre is not simply a performing arts theatre; it is a community-owned, volunteer-run, multi-purpose venue which is able to be claimed as "home" for a variety of Waiheke groups. The Snug is a relaxed and intimate venue with couches and comfortable seating for up to 20 people, and is ideal for poetry recitals, book clubs, study groups, club meetings, etc. The Auditorium (includes the stage) may be hired separately for larger group activities and performing arts, or may be hired along with the Snug for exclusive use.

The Theatre has a licensed Café and EFTPOS facilities available for special events.

We have brought new energy and enthusiasm to the Theatre with an incorporated society as the administrative structure so that many hands can make light work. This ensures the brightest of futures for our wonderful community asset. The Society has been operating the Theatre for a year now and welcomes new members. If you're into performing, children's theatre, lighting, direction/production, set design or construction, sound, front of house, administration, makeup and wardrobe, backstage, special effects, or providing that essential component of performing arts — the audience! — get in touch with your name, edress and phone number, and we'll add you as a Friend of Artworks Theatre. There is no subscription to join the Society, so feel free!

Regular Events:

  • Mondays 7:00-8:00pm from 09Feb until 30Mar: Feldenkrais classes with Judy Oliver. Feldenkrais is an educational system centered on movement, aiming to expand and refine the use of the self through awareness. It is intended for those who wish to improve their movement repertoire (dancers, musicians, artists), as well as those wishing to reduce pain or limitations in movement, and many who want to improve their general well-being and personal development. Because it uses movement as the primary vehicle for gaining awareness, it is directly applicable to disorders that arise from restricted or habitually poor movement. Contact Judy on 372-9780 or JudysMove@xtra.co.nz.
  • Mondays 8-10pm: Drum Forum: Contact Paul Gilligan on 027-481-1482 for more information.
  • Thursdays 7:30-9pm: Afro/Latin/Brazilian Dancing: Entry by koha. Contact Tania for more information: 027-654-3651.

Upcoming Special Events:

  • Su12Apr 2pm: The Orderly by the Rebel Alliance: "Hospitals are Battlefields": Enter the fringe world of medieval re-enactment and meet Peter -- orderly during the week, ferocious warrior in the weekend. As he prepares for the weekend's big battle against the notorious Vikings, a friend in need changes his life. Time flickers, empty hospital wards turn into long-forgotten battlefields, and everybody fights for their lives. Inspired by the real life of an Auckland hospital orderly who died in 2003, The Orderly takes you into the very heart of one of life's foot soldiers. The play is written and performed by Michael Downey, who takes on all parts; ranging from the gorgeous nurse, Donna, to a semi-nude Viking berserker high on mushrooms and lusting for blood. See www.therebelalliance.co.nz/the-orderly. Doors and café open at 7:30. Tickets will be $20 / $15 / $10 prepaid and door sales will be $25 / $20 / $10.
  • Fr08May 7pm and Sa09May 2pm: Letteracy: "It was called "Flora’s Hairy Chest" – a goat-skin trunk that contained all of our family secrets; a litter of letters, left like worded crumbs to mark the path home." Meet Emily Post, the Queen of letter writing, etiquette, pole dance with a letter box, see the Tsar's slot and play the game you've got mail… A lively interactive piece of storytelling theatre, stamped, sealed and delivered by story-o-phile and frock-o-holic Tanya Batt. "… It’s an hour-long, one-woman, laugh-out-loud, non-embarrassing audience-interaction show. We left feeling decidedly excellent. Yes, there is interaction. No, you are unlikely to feel embarrassed if you are chosen!"
  • Sa09May 8pm: Sika Encore: Sika sold out last year's "Lightning Man" concert, so make sure you get in early this time! Experience the power of the ancient didjeridoo, Native American flute, drums, voice and percussion with internationally acclaimed performer and recording artist Sika. This very unusual concert has stirred up quite a following here in NZ, as well as in the UK, USA and Australia. See www.caitlinsika.com for more details.
  • Fr14May-Sa23May: Peter Pan production by the Waiheke Choral Society.
