Artworks Community Theatre is not simply a performing arts theatre; it is a community-owned, volunteer-run, multi-purpose venue which is able to be claimed as "home" for a variety of Waiheke groups. The Snug is a relaxed and intimate venue with couches and comfortable seating for up to 20 people, and is ideal for poetry recitals, book clubs, study groups, club meetings, etc. The Auditorium (includes the stage) may be hired separately for larger group activities and performing arts, or may be hired along with the Snug for exclusive use.

The Theatre has a licensed Café and EFTPOS facilities available for special events.

We have brought new energy and enthusiasm to the Theatre with an incorporated society as the administrative structure so that many hands can make light work. This ensures the brightest of futures for our wonderful community asset. The Society has been operating the Theatre since 2008 and always welcomes new members. If you're into performing, children's theatre, lighting, direction/production, set design or construction, sound, front of house, administration, makeup and wardrobe, backstage, special effects, or providing that essential component of performing arts — the audience! — get in touch with your name, edress and phone number, and we'll add you as a Friend of Artworks Theatre. There is no subscription to join the Society, so feel free!

Visit our website at www.ArtworksTheatre.org.nz or, for enquiries about the Theatre, coming events, or to book tickets, email ArtworksTheatre@gmail.com or leave a message on 372-2941.

  • Fr29Jan & Sa30Jan: The Magic Rock, an Artworks Youth Theatre Production. A tour of the Waiheke Island you never knew existed! The Magic Rock has been devised by the wonderful students of Artworks Youth Theatre 2009-2010 with some help from Paolo Rotondo, Amber Curreen and Tainui Tukiwaho. Waiheke Island — "The Rock" — comes to life under the imagination of these wonderful young storytellers and performers as they prepare to share with the audience the secrets of their magical Waiheke. Teeming with bizarre beings, charismatic creatures, sumptuous stories, warriors and weirdos, the audience will be taken on a tour of the Waiheke Island they never knew existed! The students will be combining their natural talent with the various storytelling devices and performance techniques they have learnt over the programme to bring you this (sometimes scandalous!) story. With minimal special effects and staging, the audience will get a chance to see the students' unique creativity shine through. So come along to one of the shows in the Theatre at Artworks, where imagination, storytelling and artistic endeavour find their home — and enter the enchanted Waiheke the kids have created over this summer. Shows: Fri29Jan at 6:00pm; Sat30Jan at 2:00pm; and Sat30Jan at 7:00pm. Tickets: Adults $10; Children (5-15) $5; (Under-5s free); Family (2 adults and 2+ children) $25. Bookings with the Theatre.

February

  • Fr12 and Sa13Feb, 7:30-10:30pm: Jane Siberry & Monique Rhodes Live! Jane Siberry is a Canadian singer/songwriter best known for “Calling All Angels,” which mingles uncertainty and benediction. She has been a fully independent musician since the mid-'90s, releasing her own albums. Although she has delved into various styles, toying with electronics and jazz, at the core of her music are folky guitar chords or a stately piano that hints at church and chamber music. Her voice has a reedy quaver and a tinge of breathiness like a breeze through a wheat field. European-based Kiwi Monique Rhodes has played all over the world, toured with Chuck Berry, worked with Peter Gabriel's band, written music for the producers of The Secret, presented a private concert for the Dutch royal family and performed for the Dalai Lama and Carla Bruni, though not at the same time! Tickets $25: bookings with the Theatre. Doors and café open at 7pm.
