Spiritual Cinema

Waiheke Spiritual Cinema Circle is a group of people who get together every month for an offering of films from all over the world that explore the questions of who we are, why we're here and where we're going with a focus on inspiring, enthusing and entertaining you — and fundraising for Island causes at the same time.

Spiritual Cinema evenings are held on the last Wednesday of each month at Waiheke Community Cinema, starting at 7:30pm, and are sponsored by Waiheke Wellness, Auckland City and the Cinema.

Entry is by donation ($10 suggested) or by koha, and proceeds go to a different community group every month.

Screenings are restricted to Cinema Circle members: you can join at the door (annual sub of $2).

Films for March (on We31Mar):

7:30 That's Magic!: With beautiful cinematography and a captivating soundtrack, this musical short tells the story of a gifted but jaded magician who is all alone once the admiring audience has left. For the magician, "Only the very young and the very foolish believe in magic." One snowy night after a performance, a mysterious visitor appears and takes him on a journey he will never forget. Could it be the magician who needs a lesson in magic? [15m]

7:45 Paul and His Wall: Paul, a young agoraphobic, has built a world where he never has to leave his inner-city apartment. He lives in fear of going "out there." One day he meets his beautiful new neighbour, Bo when she accidently knocks a hole through their shared wall. Bo is more than a pretty face to Paul, and soon Paul is overcome with emotions he has never felt before. Perhaps Paul has been missing out by staying in? [12m]

8:00 The Graffiti of Mr Tupaia: A janitor at a New Zealand elementary school quietly goes through his routines, almost invisible to those around him. One day, Mr Tupaia answers a message on a bathroom stall. Through four words scribbled on a wall, two lonely souls connect. [14m]

8:20 Counting Backwards: When career-driven Joe is diagnosed with terminal leukemia on the eve of his big promotion, he re-evaluates everything. Now that his days are numbered, the questions that used to be so easy to avoid are impossible to ignore. Joe commits to living the life he always wanted, and begins a quirky relationship with Claire, the fun-loving girl of his dreams. This romance sets the stage for an imaginative, inspiring take on what life could be about if he was willing to fight for it. Counting Backwards dares us to reach for our dreams. [91m]

This month’s Spiritual Cinema proceeds will go to the Steiner Homeschoolers.
